Channel 4’s CEO has apologized for the serious allegations of rape made by participants on the show ‘Married At First Sight UK.’ She also stated that the network hasn’t yet decided if it will broadcast the next season of the program.
This reality series, also popular in Australia and the US, follows couples who meet for the very first time on their wedding day. They then go on a honeymoon and move in together, all while navigating a new marriage.
A BBC Panorama program on Monday, May 18th, featured allegations of sexual misconduct against a contestant on a reality dating show. One woman publicly accused her co-star, and two others reported being raped, though they chose to remain anonymous.
All three men deny the allegations.
Channel 4’s chief executive, Priya Dogra, issued an apology on Wednesday, May 20th, while presenting the network’s yearly report, stating that the stories shared by women in a recent documentary were “deeply concerning.”
“Their distress is clear, and for that, I am of course deeply sorry,” she said.
She emphasized the significant importance of staff wellbeing throughout Channel 4, calling it a top priority. However, she stated the network is unable to look into the claims made, as the individuals involved have refuted them.
We simply broadcast content; we don’t investigate claims. When allegations like these arise, they are handled by other organizations, and the police will investigate if a complaint is filed.

Channel 4 revealed on Monday that it’s conducting an independent review of how it cares for participants on one of its shows. This decision came after receiving “very serious” claims about mistreatment of a few former contestants back in April.
During the press conference, Dogra explained that the review began only a few days after the BBC first reached out to them in April.
Dogra refuted claims that the new season of Married at First Sight UK has been cancelled, stating those reports are completely false.
The network won’t decide whether to air the sixth season until after they finish reviewing everything.
As a critic, I’ve been following the fallout from recent allegations surrounding Married at First Sight UK, and it’s impacting how the show is being presented. Channel 4 made a significant move on Monday – they’ve completely removed all past seasons from both their streaming platform and traditional TV channels. It’s a pretty drastic step, and clearly a response to the seriousness of the claims being made.
Dogra explained that the decision was made primarily to be cautious and prevent people from guessing the identities of the women featured in the Panorama program, or any other participants involved.
She explained that the program was removed because she felt it was the right decision given the situation.
The Culture, Media and Sport Committee in Parliament has contacted both Channel 4 and Ofcom to ask about how they dealt with the recent claims.
Dame Caroline Dinenage, who leads the CMS Committee, has expressed serious worries about the welfare of participants on the reality show Married At First Sight following disturbing allegations. She questioned whether current protections are sufficient for people appearing on reality TV.
The statement also noted that both Channel 4 and Ofcom, the organization that regulates broadcasting, need to quickly address some important questions.
