Following the success of Obsession, a new independent horror film is quickly gaining attention. It’s one of the year’s most eagerly awaited horror movies and has already gotten off to a strong beginning.
The new movie Backrooms is coming to theaters on Friday, May 29th, and early reviews are excellent. As of now, it has an 85% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 65 reviews.
Because the movie hasn’t been released in cinemas yet, there’s no audience rating available. Also, the current rating will probably change as more people see it, and it’s expected to be officially certified as ‘Fresh’.
What Are Critics Saying About Backrooms?
I was honestly worried Backroom would be another quickly-forgotten internet horror movie, just leaning on creepy visuals without any real substance. But honestly, director Richard Parsons totally surprised me! It’s a genuinely haunting film – it really stuck with me. It’s not just scares; it’s about feeling trapped, how our memories can play tricks on us, and how easy it is to think being alone is safe when it’s actually the opposite. It’s way more thoughtful and impactful than I expected.
In a review for TechRadar, Lucy Buglass praised the film Backrooms for its effective use of both found footage and conventional filmmaking techniques. She noted that it brilliantly captures the unsettling feeling of liminal spaces and believes fans of the Backrooms horror mythos will particularly enjoy it.
In a review for Nerdspin, Zofia Wijaszka praised Parsons’s work, describing it as a haunting story inspired by the popular ‘backrooms’ concept. She noted that the story delves into childhood trauma and its lasting impact on our lives.
What Happens in Backrooms?
The Backrooms originated with a 2019 discussion on 4chan and refers to a fictional, endlessly sprawling space of empty rooms. You enter this strange place by seemingly glitching out of reality. The concept is inspired by a web series of the same name created by director Kane Parsons.
The sci-fi horror movie follows Dr. Mary Kline as she ventures into another dimension to rescue her missing patient, Clark. Once she arrives, things quickly become terrifying.
Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as Clark, and Renate Reinsve plays his therapist. Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, Avan Jogia, Robert Bobroczkyi, and Krista Kosonen also appear in the film.
The new A24 film is predicted to be a big success. It’s launching just a week after the newest Star Wars movie and is projected to earn $40 to $45 million domestically during its opening weekend, making it A24’s biggest opening ever. This follows a string of recent successful films for the studio.
Backrooms premieres in theaters on May 29.
