As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Chris Pratt and Taylor Kitsch are reuniting in the prequel of Prime Video’s “The Terminal List,” titled “The Terminal List: Dark Wolf.” In this intriguing new series, we delve into the past of Kitsch’s character, Ben Edwards, as he navigates his transformation from a Navy SEAL to a CIA operative. Though Pratt steps back into the spotlight for the main role, he returns as James Reece, the leading character from the original “The Terminal List” series, and Edwards’s close friend and fellow SEAL in this prequel. Interestingly, both actors have made their mark in the comic book movie realm, with Kitsch portraying the X-Men hero Gambit on the silver screen, and Pratt bringing Star-Lord to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
In an interview with ComicBook, the actors explained that the methods they used to prepare for playing comic book characters differed greatly from those used for portraying Navy SEALS. Both roles are extremely challenging and physically demanding, but they found that their approach to playing Edwards and Reece was significantly different from what they’d done in their previous superhero roles. For Chris Pratt and Taylor Kitsch, comic book films require them to project a specific on-screen image, whereas for a film like “Dark Wolf,” their focus is on looking convincing while executing tasks that demonstrate specialized skills.
Pratt explained that unlike fitness models or traditional superheroes who are often portrayed as extremely muscular and shredded, the characters they play in Dark Wolf are more relatable average guys. They might enjoy a beer on weekends instead of counting carbs, but they’re still strong, with good cardio and strength-to-weight ratio. The focus for these characters is not so much on the physical aesthetic often associated with comic book heroes, but rather on their functional strength.
Kitsch emphasized the importance of making their characters more robust. He used an example: if you’re carrying a 120-pound backpack while hiking 20 miles through the mountains of Afghanistan with just 5% body fat, it will be incredibly challenging and painful. The Navy SEALs that Kitsch and Pratt consulted with suggested they add some weight to their bodies because the real work they do is extremely demanding on their physical strength.
The Terminal List: Dark Wolf Training Was More About Skill Than Look
In Dark Wolf, Pratt emphasized that their training focused on truly living the challenges their characters might encounter in reality, rather than adjusting to an exaggerated or supernatural environment.
The training primarily focuses on mastering the control of weapon systems and operating firearms, rather than shaping one’s physical appearance. It would impress a special ops agent to see someone demonstrating proper gun handling techniques, such as a correct grip or performing tactical reloads swiftly and efficiently.
Regarding the strenuous nature of his character’s role, Pratt expressed that he genuinely enjoys portraying Reece, and is enthusiastic about further exploring the universe of The Terminal List, which is based on a book series penned by Jack Carr.
