Christopher Nolan defends The Odyssey from historical accuracy criticism as toxic backlash to casting grows

Christopher Nolan, the director known for films like Oppenheimer, has responded to negative reactions online about his new movie based on The Odyssey. He’s defending his vision for the classic story after a growing number of people expressed their disapproval on social media.

I’ve been seeing a lot of discussion online since the trailers dropped, and honestly, people are picking apart the historical details. A big one is the way they have Tom Holland’s character, Telemachus, refer to his father – saying ‘dad’ just doesn’t feel right to many of us. And the armor! People are pointing out that some of it, especially what Agamemnon wears, looks way more like Batman’s suit from those Christopher Nolan movies than anything from ancient Greece. It’s definitely sparked a lot of debate.

Responding to that idea, director Christopher Nolan explained in a Time magazine interview that ancient Mycenaean daggers have been found made of darkened bronze. The prevailing theory suggests they achieved this effect by using sulfur and adding gold and silver to the bronze.

Our costume designer, Ellen Mirojnick, is working to show Agamemnon’s higher status compared to other characters. She’s doing this by using very luxurious and costly fabrics.

Nolan compared his approach to The Odyssey with what he employed in making Interstellar.

You know, when I think about Interstellar, Nolan really seems to be asking himself, ‘What’s the most compelling way to imagine the future?’ And it’s fascinating to me because he says when he tackles the distant past, he’s essentially doing the same thing! He’s always searching for the most interesting ideas and then building an entire world around them.

We hope audiences will like the movie, even if it doesn’t completely align with their views. We received criticism from many scientists after making ‘Interstellar,’ but it’s important to show we approached the project with seriousness and care.

The Odyssey boasts a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson, and is expected to be one of the biggest movies of the year.

However, it’s not just the film’s historical accuracy that has faced backlash online.

Ever since Lupita Nyong’o, an Academy Award winner, was announced to play both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra in the new epic film, online conversations about the movie have become increasingly negative and hostile.

Elon Musk, one of the world’s wealthiest people, and several conservative voices have expressed disapproval of the casting choices for an upcoming film. Specifically, they’ve criticized the selection of Lupita Nyong’o to play Helen of Troy and Elliot Page, who is rumored to be portraying the spirit of Achilles.

Elon Musk commented on his platform X (formerly Twitter) that director Christopher Nolan seems focused on winning awards. He was responding to a discussion about the Oscars’ diversity requirements, but Variety points out those rules don’t really affect casting decisions.

It’s important to remember that the characters in this story are based on myths and legends, not actual historical people.

Even with all the talk surrounding it, the movie is expected to be a big success at the box office. Universal Pictures did something unusual by announcing when tickets would go on sale for several 70mm IMAX showings a year in advance – and those showings sold out in just 12 hours.
