No movie coming out in 2026 is generating more buzz than Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. After the massive success of Oppenheimer, Nolan is tackling Homer’s classic story with a huge, all-star cast including Matt Damon as Odysseus and Tom Holland as his son, Telemachus. Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron also star. The film is already creating excitement thanks to reports about innovative camera work and the massive scope of the production. Though it won’t be in theaters until July 2026, a few lucky fans will get a sneak peek at some footage before the end of this year.
Universal Pictures is giving IMAX audiences an exclusive first look at The Odyssey with a six-minute prologue starting December 12th. This special preview will only be shown for one week and will play before screenings of the IMAX versions of Sinners and One Battle After Another. This is a way to reward fans who enjoy seeing movies in premium large format theaters. The full marketing campaign, including the first trailer for The Odyssey, will begin December 19th, playing before showings of Avatar: Fire and Ash.
It Makes Sense for The Odyssey to Hype IMAX Screenings

Christopher Nolan is a well-known advocate for the IMAX experience, but his new film, The Odyssey, takes it to another level. It’s the first feature film ever shot entirely using IMAX 70mm cameras, which required creating entirely new camera technology. The production builds on the success of Oppenheimer, which demonstrated that audiences will go to theaters for premium formats. IMAX screenings of Oppenheimer generated over $190 million – a remarkable 20% of the film’s nearly $1 billion worldwide earnings, an unusually high percentage for a three-hour drama. Nolan believes offering a theatrical experience you can’t get at home is key to keeping movie theaters thriving, and he’s making the format itself a major reason for people to go.
The strong support for traditional movie theaters arrives at a crucial time for the film industry. The recent news of Netflix potentially buying Warner Bros. Discovery suggests a future where a major movie studio could be owned by a streaming service that hasn’t traditionally favored theatrical releases. This possible acquisition helps explain why Christopher Nolan left Warner Bros. years ago, a decision triggered by the studio’s controversial decision to release all its 2021 movies on HBO Max at the same time as in theaters. Nolan strongly criticized this move, saying filmmakers felt like they went to sleep working for a top studio and woke up working for a low-quality streaming service. Universal Pictures secured Nolan’s next projects by guaranteeing a traditional theatrical release window, and his latest film, The Odyssey, continues that commitment by highlighting the importance of seeing movies in theaters.
The Odyssey is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 17, 2026.
