CinemaCon is currently happening, and attendees have seen clips from upcoming movies like Resident Evil and Godzilla Minus Zero. There was a lot of excitement about DC Studios potentially showing off footage from its future films, especially a movie focusing on Batman’s classic foe, Clayface. Thankfully, fans weren’t disappointed! We got a first look at the project, and early reactions suggest it’s a great portrayal of the iconic villain.
The scene opens with quick cuts between a badly injured man, his face covered in bandages, and the character Matt Hagen, played by Tom Rhys Harries. The injuries are quite graphic – at one point, you can see he’s missing an eyelid. As the scene continues, Hagen’s face begins to distort and melt as he battles to control his newfound abilities. We then get a quick glimpse of Clayface’s complete form, including his signature spiky fist and melting features – a brief but promising preview of what DC has planned.
This Seems To Be The Clayface Showcase DC Fans Have Been Waiting For

Although not originally planned, a Clayface movie is gaining traction at DC Studios. James Gunn has praised the script and concept, and Mike Flanagan, known for The Haunting of Hill House, is directing. Tom Rhys Harries will play the role of the shapeshifting villain, a former actor.
While Flangag’s impressive experience is clear, a major reason for the excitement around the film is how enthusiastic Flanagan is about the character. He originally proposed a Clayface movie to DC Studios, and although Warner Bros. Discovery initially passed, the new heads of the studio, James Gunn and Peter Safran, immediately supported the idea.
People are also excited about the character’s portrayal and the film’s overall mood. Director Mike Flanagan has said he’s taking inspiration from what many consider the best version of Clayface – the one from Batman: The Animated Series. While the character has had great moments in the comics, the animated series version is the most memorable for many fans.
James Gunn has likened this version of the story to a horror film. Considering the already dark tone of Batman: The Animated Series, along with the talented director and lead actor involved, it looks like fans are finally getting the Clayface-focused story they’ve been hoping for.
