The anime and manga world is largely driven by series aimed at young boys, known as ‘Shonen,’ with many popular titles focusing on action and fighting. The best-selling manga of all time, like One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, and Demon Slayer, are typically Shonen. Often, a manga’s success leads to an anime adaptation, and many series published in Shonen Jump get an anime version within a few years of the manga’s release. While ‘Shojo’ series, aimed at young girls, don’t usually achieve the same global popularity, they often tell more original and unique stories. The 1990s were a great time for both Shonen and Shojo manga, with many Shojo classics still beloved today. However, despite critical praise and dedicated fans, many of these Shojo series never got turned into anime. Red River, created by Chie Shinohara, ran in Sho-Comi magazine from 1995 to 2002. This fantasy story was highly acclaimed by both readers and critics, even winning a Shogakukan Manga Award in 2000. Now, over thirty years after the manga first came out, an anime adaptation has finally been announced.
Red River Will Be Released in Summer 2026
The new anime is set to debut in July as part of the Summer 2026 season, according to an announcement on its official X account. While a trailer isn’t available yet, a beautiful key visual has been released, giving fans their first look at the main characters. VAP is producing the anime, and the legendary Tatsunoko Production – a Japanese animation studio founded in 1962 – is overseeing its creation.
The studio behind popular anime like Ping Pong the Animation and Neon Genesis Evangelion recently shared a new character visual on the official anime website. This was posted by Chie Shinohara, a highly celebrated manga artist. While details are still limited – including where to stream the show and who will voice the characters – the studio is expected to release more information in the coming weeks, as the premiere is only a few months away.
