Osamu Tezuka, a highly celebrated Japanese manga artist and animator, is considered both the “God of Manga” and the “Father of Anime.” He dramatically changed the manga and anime world with his compelling stories, memorable characters, and innovative page designs. Over a career lasting more than forty years, Tezuka established the groundwork for modern manga and inspired countless artists, including creators of popular series like Dragon Ball and Monster. He also popularized the now-familiar large-eyed character style in anime. His series, Astro Boy, was particularly groundbreaking. It was Japan’s first animated television show and essentially launched the entire anime industry, also establishing the episodic format still used today. Astro Boy tackled important themes like artificial intelligence, prejudice, and the impact of war – subjects that weren’t commonly explored in entertainment at the time. Tezuka’s impact on anime and manga is unparalleled, and his contributions are still widely admired. However, his son, Makoto Tezuka, has faced criticism for attempting to recreate his father’s work using artificial intelligence.
