After nearly ten years, the manga Black Torch is getting a new anime adaptation this year. Created by Tsuyoshi Takaki, who also created Heart Gear and Rose Guns Days Sorrowful Cross Knife, the series originally ran in Shueisha’s Jump SQ magazine from 2016 to 2018. The animation is being handled by 100studio, established in 2018, and will be directed by Kei Kamabaki, who previously directed the 2024 anime Quality Assurance in Another World. Black Torch is scheduled to premiere in July 2026 as part of the summer anime season, though specific details about the release date and number of episodes are still to come.
Based on the number of chapters in the manga, the anime adaptation will likely be a short, single season, unless the studio adds extra content. The original manga, Black Torch, is well-regarded for its distinctive supernatural elements, exciting action, and surprisingly well-developed characters, even though it’s a relatively short series. As the manga celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2026, the new trailer is generating buzz, despite the series not having a huge following among newer readers. Crunchyroll has confirmed that the anime will be available on its streaming platform in North, Central, and South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, and CIS countries. While a dubbed version hasn’t been announced yet, subtitles will be available in six languages.
What Is Black Torch About?

The story follows Jiro Azuma, a 17-year-old who’s often avoided because he can talk to animals. He attempts to live a quiet life with his grandfather, using his gift to help and befriend creatures in need. However, Jiro keeps stumbling into trouble, much to the frustration of his grandfather, who hopes he’ll fulfill the expectations of the Azuma family.
The Azuma family has a long history as a clan of ninjas, and Jiro, as a family member, always stood out. Everything changes when he rescues a black cat named Rago. Jiro soon discovers Rago isn’t a normal animal – he’s a powerful spirit called a mononoke, who has been battling humans for centuries. Rago is being hunted by others of his kind, who want him to join them in harming people.
Jiro bravely steps in when Rago is attacked again, but is seriously injured trying to save him. Rago then uses his own strength to heal Jiro, who later sets out on a quest to fight dangerous spirits called mononoke. You can read all the chapters of the manga and purchase both physical and digital copies of the volumes on Viz Media’s official website.
