Remedy Entertainment, the studio behind unique and often unconventional games, hasn’t always seen strong sales. Their new CEO, Jean-Charles Gaudechon, who previously worked at EA, recently discussed the company’s current projects and his plans to boost game sales in an interview with The Game Business.
Gaudechon addressed concerns that Remedy Entertainment might change for the worse after he became CEO, referencing anxieties some fans have based on his past experience at Electronic Arts. He reassured them that he was appointed because he deeply understands Remedy’s unique identity and what it needs to thrive.
Gaudechon acknowledged there’s been a lot of discussion about someone with experience at EA joining Remedy. He understands the concern that this person might try to implement large-company practices that could stifle the studio’s creative spirit.
I believe I was selected for this role because I deeply understand Remedy and what makes it special. I know what needs safeguarding, nurturing, and developing within the studio. Remedy is truly unique – it’s a place with incredible creative energy, and its history, even with its challenges, is what fueled the creation of its memorable games. My goal is to provide a clear vision for the company’s future and identify areas where we can improve and grow.
“Who am I to change the DNA of a 30-year successful game studio?”
He talked about how much love and respect Remedy has earned from fans with games like Alan Wake 2 and Control. He even shared messages from friends jokingly urging him not to mess things up, saying they were huge fans of the studio.
“That shows you how much people love Remedy,” he said.
Remedy Entertainment is already a major game developer known for its unique titles. Having worked closely with them now, I believe we can deliver even more incredibly creative and engaging stories and gameplay experiences. We’ve only begun to tap into the full potential of the games we can create together.
He plans to continue the direction Remedy Entertainment established before he became CEO, focusing on developing the studio’s existing game properties into full-fledged franchises.
Our partnership with Annapurna will help us elevate our existing games and franchises and reach new players. We believe games like Alan Wake and Control haven’t reached their full potential in terms of sales, and that’s our first priority – to maximize the success of the games we already have, because they’re fantastic. Expanding into other media, like TV or film, will be key to achieving this.
Gaudechon addressed the growing discussion around AI in the gaming industry. While his studio is approaching it carefully and isn’t actively adopting it, he believes AI tools could be helpful during the initial phases of game development and when creating prototypes. He won’t require developers to use AI, but he also won’t prevent them from experimenting with it if they think it could be beneficial.
Honestly, I don’t think AI is going to lower game development costs anytime soon. I’ve seen people saying it will, and I’m really skeptical. Like, what kind of games are we talking about? The CEO said it himself – good luck trying to create something as complex as Alan Wake 2 using AI tools like Genie. I’d love to see someone actually try and prove me wrong, but I think it’s a huge challenge.
We’ve always focused on research and development, constantly experimenting with new technologies. I want to continue allowing that exploration, but we’ll be very careful to keep it separate from our actual creative projects and anything that directly impacts our users.
Remedy Entertainment is developing Control Resonant for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. As of now, they haven’t announced when the game will be released.
