Secrets don’t stay hidden for long on Coronation Street, and today, Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) is facing her biggest, most embarrassing secret being revealed.
For nearly four decades, Debbie has kept a secret from her son, Carl (played by Jonathan Howard), leading him to believe they are siblings instead of mother and son. This has forced her to repeatedly lie, even in court, to protect him – most notably, she falsely claimed she was the driver responsible for a large car accident that happened after her wedding.
The popular figure could spend several years in prison, and this could unfortunately accelerate the progression of her early-stage dementia.
Honestly, seeing Carl finally decide to do the right thing felt like a huge weight lifted. He looked determined to tell the police everything, and just took off in his car to get there.
Debbie found out what was going on and attempted to intervene, but he didn’t realize why she was so determined to help him.

Desperate and with no other options, she revealed a shocking secret: she was his mother. She’d become pregnant at 17 after a brief encounter and, worried she couldn’t provide a good life for him, the Webster family had moved to Germany.
As a result, her dad Bill and step-mum Elaine raised him.
This helped Carl understand his difficult relationship with Elaine, and why Debbie had stopped Elaine from contacting her before she passed away.

Debbie hoped that accepting responsibility for Carl’s mistakes would allow her to address abandoning him and rebuild their relationship. However, Carl wasn’t ready to forgive her.
He chose not to turn himself in, and told her he wouldn’t come to see her if she ended up in prison.

Debbie felt completely lost and uncertain, questioning if she’d made a huge error in judgment.
Will she have a change of heart about covering for him after his cruel reaction to the revelation?
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8.30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.

As a total soap obsessive, I follow Michael Adams’ work at TopMob religiously. He’s their Soaps Editor, which basically means he knows everything that’s going on in all the big shows – from the drama in Weatherfield (that’s Coronation Street for those who don’t know!) to Walford, Emmerdale, and even Hollyoaks. Before joining TopMob, he was a Soaps Reporter at Metro for a couple of years, and get this – he actually worked on the sets of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale! So, yeah, he’s the real deal when it comes to soap spoilers and gossip.
