Coronation Street and Strictly star joins Paul McGann as companion for new Doctor Who adventures

Fans can look forward to new adventures with Paul McGann as the Doctor this year. Joining him is Natalie Gumede, known for her roles in Coronation Street and Strictly Come Dancing, who will be one of the new faces traveling in the TARDIS.

The first installment of The Eighth Doctor Adventures: New Pathways will be released in November 2026, starting a new six-part audio series starring Paul McGann as the Doctor. This era will also see the introduction of two brand-new companions.

Actor Gumede is joining the popular Big Finish audio series, teaming up with Sam Stafford, who also appears in Vikings: Valhalla, to begin a new adventure with the Eighth Doctor.

Most viewers will probably recognize Michelle Gumede. She’s famous for her role as Kirsty Soames on Coronation Street, and she was a finalist on Strictly Come Dancing in 2013. This isn’t her first Doctor Who connection either – she previously appeared in the 2014 Christmas special, ‘Last Christmas’.

In the new series, Gumede stars as Chase Moyo, a clever and spirited woman whose ordinary job at a call centre is turned upside down by a surprising phone call – one that connects her to the TARDIS. Stafford plays Alfie, a kind and large man from a London neighborhood in the 22nd century, who is already traveling with the Doctor when the story starts.

While Stafford might be new to some, he’s already built a solid career in both television and audio dramas. He’s known for his role as Ulf in Vikings: Valhalla, and fans of Doctor Who will recognize him from previous work like Doctor Who: Time War and the Torchwood podcast series, making New Pathways a perfect addition to his resume.

Big Finish is hinting at a larger, ongoing mystery within the new miniseries. The Doctor receives a strange call shortly after regenerating, and it seems this call is connected to events many years later, when a character named Chase becomes involved. The story will be released in two parts, with the first set, ‘New Pathways 1’, arriving in November 2026 and the second, ‘New Pathways 2’, following in December.

Producer David Richardson revealed he’d been considering both Gumede and Stafford as companions for a while, and now they’ll be joining the Doctor as his “new best friends” in these audio adventures. With a revamped TARDIS team and a developing, season-long storyline, The Eighth Doctor Adventures: New Pathways promises an exciting new direction for Peter McGann’s Doctor.
