Jonathan Howard has confirmed he’ll continue playing the character Carl Webster on Coronation Street, even after a year of portraying the villainous role.
Okay, so right from the start, this character was already causing trouble! He immediately started flirting with Abi Webster, and things quickly escalated into a full-blown affair. But here’s the kicker – she had absolutely no idea he was also seeing James Bailey at the same time. Talk about a messy situation, and honestly, as a viewer, it was a total shock!
Carl falsely accused his sister, Debbie (Sue Devaney), of causing a fatal accident while driving recklessly, and surprisingly, she didn’t expose his lie. It was later revealed she kept silent because she was hiding a secret from the past.
For nearly four decades, she let him think they were brother and sister, when in reality, she was his mother.
Debbie was fed up with his awful behavior and gave him money, wishing he would just move away from Weatherfield. But just as he was about to leave, her uncle Kevin snatched the money right back.

Seeking revenge, Carl went to the garage intending to sabotage Kevin’s car brakes. Tyrone Dobbs noticed what he was doing and began filming it on his phone, but while stumbling around near the car jack, he accidentally caused the vehicle to fall onto himself.
Ronnie Bailey (Vinta Morgan) then stepped in to whisk Carl’s lifeless body to hospital.
Recent episodes featured a tense confrontation involving a firearm. Carl was originally asked to give the gun to someone connected with the questionable Fiona Morley (played by Sara Poyzer), but Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances Brown) has since taken it.
Debbie, diagnosed with early-onset dementia, has asked her son to locate the weapon before Fiona can get revenge on their family.
But could this spell an exit for the character?
“Originally, when I joined, it was like ‘okay, I’ll do 12 months’,” Howard told The Mirror.

It would be a shame for Carl to leave now, before he’s had time to process and accept his mother’s dementia diagnosis.
I’d like to wait and see how things go with Debbie before deciding what to do next.
Jonathan Harvey, the acclaimed writer, has suggested that the storyline involving Debbie’s dementia will unfold over the next several years. This indicates that both Howard and his co-star, Sue Devaney, could remain on television until 2027.
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 or can be streamed from 7am on ITVX.
