The winter anime season of 2026 is starting strong with returning favorites like Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 3, and Hell’s Paradise Season 3, alongside several new shows. One standout is Sentenced to Be a Hero, an action-fantasy anime that turned out to be an isekai. It premiered on Crunchyroll on January 3rd, 2026, and quickly gained popularity thanks to its impressive animation, original story, and engaging plot. The anime is adapted from a light novel by Rocket Shoukai with illustrations by Mephisto, which began in 2021. A manga adaptation illustrated by Natsumi Inoue followed in 2022.
After its initial release, the anime quickly became one of the year’s most popular shows. It’s highly regarded within the isekai genre, offering fresh and original ideas that set it apart. A second season was announced shortly after the first season ended, though a release date hasn’t been revealed yet. The creator recently spoke with Anime News Network about the story, its origins, and the anime adaptation.
Sentenced to Be a Hero Hypes Upcoming Anime Sequel

At the close of the interview, the creators were asked to share a message for their fans. Shoukai responded by saying he’s incredibly happy anyone has taken an interest in Sentenced to Be a Hero, whether through the anime or the novel. As an online author, he’s deeply grateful for any recognition, and hopes fans will continue to follow Xylo’s story until the very end.
The first season of the anime ends with a big cliffhanger, but Xylo’s story isn’t over! The sequel will bring new challenges for him. The author is keeping the details a secret, but encourages fans to keep watching and see what happens to the characters.
What Is Sentenced to Be a Hero About?

This story presents a dark twist on the idea of heroism. Instead of being reserved for the virtuous, the title of ‘hero’ is given only to the most terrible criminals as their ultimate punishment. They are forced to fight an unending war against powerful Demon Lords, and are forbidden from dying – even if they fall, they are resurrected repeatedly. However, this resurrection is a horrific process, dragging their souls back from hell and into their bodies, which slowly erases their memories and sense of who they are.
Xylo Forbartz, once a leader of the Holy Knights, now commands a unit of outcasts fighting in a brutal war. Accused of killing a goddess, he faces a terrible punishment. Just when he’s lost everything, he meets Teoritta, a formidable weapon who offers him a chance at revenge against those who destroyed his life. Together, they forge an alliance and begin a dangerous journey filled with conflict and violence.
