Most people immediately think of Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and with good reason – he’s played the character for 15 years in four solo films, and he’s still set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday. It’s likely he’ll always be linked to the role. But Hemsworth is also establishing himself as a versatile actor outside of superhero movies. He proved he could lead a serious action film with Extraction, and now Crime 101 demonstrates his range extends even further.
Despite positive reviews, the film Crime 101 didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $71.7 million worldwide with a $90 million budget. However, this wasn’t due to the movie’s quality. Crime 101 is now available on Amazon Prime Video, and it’s likely to find its audience there.
‘Crime 101’ Is a Crime Thriller Built on Character
Bart Layton’s film, Crime 101, based on Don Winslow’s story, centers around Mike Davis, a clever jewel thief who operates along the 101 Freeway in Los Angeles. He’s known for carefully planning his heists to avoid violence and leaving no trace. Things get complicated when a determined LAPD detective, played by Mark Ruffalo, starts tracking his methods, and a meeting with an insurance broker, played by Halle Berry, throws Mike’s plans into disarray. The film also stars Barry Keoghan, Monica Barbaro, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Nick Nolte.
I have to say, Crime 101 really surprised me. It’s a film that deliberately avoids becoming a typical action flick or even a straightforward heist movie, and that’s precisely what makes it work. What we get instead is a fascinating, layered character study – actually, four of them, all interwoven. There’s a definite Michael Mann vibe, reminiscent of Thief, which is rare for a studio release these days. The film isn’t about shocking twists or graphic violence; it’s more interested in the gray areas of morality and builds suspense through sharp, intelligent dialogue. It’s a really refreshing, thoughtful piece – the kind of movie Hollywood just doesn’t produce very often.
‘Crime 101’ Proves That Hemsworth Is More Than a Marvel Fixture

It’s surprising that Crime 101 didn’t do well in theaters, considering its strong critical reception. The film currently has an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and many critics highlighted Chris Hemsworth’s performance as one of his best. MovieWeb’s Eric Goldman observed that Hemsworth convincingly portrays his character as someone who has meticulously built himself into a highly skilled thief. Hemsworth delivered an unusual performance by toning down his usual charm to play a reserved, thoughtful character who appears confident but is secretly vulnerable. Throughout the film, his character conveys a sense of inner turmoil, and even when he seems most intimidating, you can sense a hidden fragility.
The actors all deliver strong performances. Halle Berry has been consistently praised as the best part of the film, with many calling it her strongest work in years. Viewers overwhelmingly agree, giving the movie an 85% approval rating and describing it as a surprisingly heartfelt heist story. Nearly everyone who’s seen Crime 101 has loved it – the main issue is that it hasn’t reached a wider audience. Hopefully, streaming will help more people discover it, as it’s been a long time coming.
Crime 101 is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
