When Criminal Minds ended on CBS, fans believed the Behavioral Analysis Unit’s story was over. However, the show’s revival on Paramount+ offered a chance to fix problems from the original network run, and Criminal Minds: Evolution has successfully found its footing as a streaming series with a fresh new style.

A key change in Criminal Minds: Evolution is its focus on larger, season-long cases involving the criminals they pursue. This allows the BAU team more time to investigate, and also provides opportunities to develop the personal lives and motivations of its members. While the show isn’t primarily focused on character studies, recent seasons of the revival have explored who the BAU agents are as individuals, giving each of them a significant storyline—except for one veteran character.

Now that Criminal Minds: Evolution is starting its fourth season, fans will finally see Luke Alvez (Adam Rodriguez) take on a leading role. Though he joined the BAU in season 12 of Criminal Minds and continued into Evolution, his role has often felt smaller compared to his colleagues. As the show moved towards focusing more on character development, other team members received deeper storylines, while Alvez was largely relegated to a supporting role, primarily focused on keeping cases progressing.

Although Evolution hasn’t deeply explored the personal lives of all its characters over its four seasons, most of the BAU team members have had significant storylines beyond just solving cases. Penelope Garcia’s return to the team was a key part of the first season, and her relationship with Tyler Green developed over multiple seasons. Tara Lewis experienced a new romance and a near-death experience, while JJ Jareau faced the loss of her husband and a public scandal. Even David Rossi has navigated personal relationship issues.

I’ve noticed Alvez hasn’t been as central to the action lately; he’s been mostly there to help with cases and offer support to everyone else during this season of Evolutions. It’s clear something needed to change to give him a bigger role and let his character really shine, instead of just being the team’s supportive friend.

Alvez’s Role On The Team Has Shifted Throughout Evolution’s Run

When Alvez joined the team in season 12 of Criminal Minds, he was initially seen as a strong, action-oriented agent. While everyone at the BAU is skilled at profiling, Alvez’s extensive military background made him particularly quick to take charge. He was a capable profiler in the traditional sense, but as the show revealed more of his character, it became clear he was complex. Having dealt with the difficult experiences from his military service, Alvez eventually became a more cheerful and approachable member of the team.

When the show began its new direction, Alvez was still with the team, even though the department had been downsized. Emily Prentiss continued to see him as a valuable profiler, but his responsibilities had changed along with the rest of the BAU. While Alvez still worked as a profiler at the start of the new season, he was noticeably more subdued and less outwardly confident than he had been earlier in the series.

Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 19 Has Big Plans For Alvez

I’m so glad the show is finally giving Alvez a big storyline! For the first three seasons of Criminal Minds: Evolution, he felt a little sidelined, but it’s great to see him front and center again. In season 19, episode 2, “Cluster,” we see him really struggling, and it turns out he’s grieving the loss of his therapy dog, Roxy. The case they’re working on, involving veterans, really hits home for him and brings up his own PTSD, making things even harder with Roxy gone – she was a huge support for him.

Losing his dog has brought back old trauma for Alvez, something he hasn’t confronted in years. This is made even harder by a challenging military-focused case. Alvez has long managed his past through therapy and a consistent routine, but now, as the season of Criminal Minds: Evolution unfolds, he’s facing intense grief and struggling without his usual coping mechanisms. Things are about to become very difficult for him as he deals with his loss and the strong emotions it brings up.

Although details are still emerging, Criminal Minds producers have confirmed that Alvez will play a major role this season. After being underutilized for several seasons, the show is finally giving this popular character a chance to be the focus of his own storyline.
