Amazon Studios is releasing a new animated fantasy series called The Mighty Nein. Set in the world of Exandria, the show centers around a ragtag group of characters who unexpectedly team up and become involved in an epic adventure. They might be the only ones who can prevent a huge war between two strong sides and save the entire kingdom.
The Mighty Nein is a story created by the team at Critical Role, the group behind the popular web series where actors play Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). They also recently released a video game called Dispatch. Critical Role previously adapted their first campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina, into a series for Amazon Prime Video.
Now, the second campaign, The Mighty Nein, is getting the same adaptation. Some viewers might be unsure about watching, especially if they’re new to Critical Role or Dungeons & Dragons. But you won’t need any prior knowledge to enjoy The Mighty Nein.
At the premiere of their new animated show, TopMob spoke with the cast – who are also executive producers – about why they believe it’s a great introduction to the series for new viewers.
Matthew Mercer explained that the creators deliberately aimed to build a fantasy world that felt immersive and complex. They wanted players to be drawn in gradually, experiencing surprising depth in a way that felt welcoming rather than overwhelming.
Taliesin Jaffe praised the show’s immersive world-building, telling TopMob that viewers can jump right in without any prior knowledge. He explained that the show expertly guides audiences through its expansive world in a clear and accessible way.
Liam O’Brien explained that you don’t need to be familiar with previous storylines or ‘Legend of Vox Machina’ to enjoy this new story. He described it as a self-contained narrative, but hinted that it might leave viewers wanting to explore more of the world afterward.
We interviewed the main cast, including Ashley Johnson, who plays Yasha Nydoorin, Laura Bailey as Jester Lavorre, Matthew Mercer as Essek Thelyss, Marisha Ray as Beauregard Lionett, Sam Riegel as Nott the Brave, Taliesin Jaffe as Mollymauk Tealeaf, and Liam O’Brien as Caleb Wildogast. Tasha Huo, the showrunner, was also included in these conversations.
The Mighty Nein is streaming on Amazon Studios’ Prime Video.
The Cast of The Mighty Nein Explain Why the Show Is the Perfect Entry Point for New Fans

There’s No Need to Be Intimidated By What Came Before.
- TopMob: “For people that maybe don’t know anything about Critical Role, maybe don’t even know D&D, why is this the perfect starting point for them?”
It’s hard to say if this is the best way to begin, but we’re hoping it is. What we, as friends, really wanted to capture with ‘Mighty Nein,’ and with how we play Dungeons & Dragons, is the importance of friendship. It might sound a little cheesy, but that’s the main feeling we want people to take away from the story.
Laura Bailey describes the show as a story about adventure and the universal search for meaning. Everyone, including the characters, is looking for something – whether it’s family, friendship, or a sense of belonging. They’re all a little lost, but they find their way through their connections with each other, and things eventually start to fall into place.
Matthew Mercer explained that the goal during development was to create a fantasy world that felt immersive and complex. They wanted players to be drawn in gradually, then surprised by the depth of the setting – making it appealing rather than overwhelming. He acknowledged that introducing something entirely new, even within a familiar genre, isn’t for everyone, and some people might not be interested.
We really focused on creating something engaging, where the story unfolds gradually and you become invested in the characters and their fates. We want you to feel connected to the world we’ve built and enjoy experiencing it. We believe this makes it a great place to start, and we intentionally designed it that way.
Marisha Ray hopes viewers realize how fulfilling it is to create stories together. This story started as an improvisation between us, played out live, and has now become an animated series. She believes that collaborative storytelling can be rewarding no matter what you do – whether you work in finance or the arts.
This show appeals to both longtime fans and newcomers because the characters are relatable, regardless of their abilities or how they fight. They’ve all faced challenges – dealing with insecurities, escaping past mistakes, or chasing a hopeful future – experiences that viewers can connect with. You’ll quickly become invested in these characters, and the fantasy elements are introduced gradually, enhancing the story without overwhelming it.
Taliesin Jaffe described the work as having excellent world-building that’s accessible to everyone, even without prior knowledge. It gently guides you through a vast and interesting world, revealing its unique rules at a comfortable pace. He emphasized that it feels different from typical fantasy, and that the deliberate, unhurried storytelling allows viewers to fully immerse themselves in the experience.
We carefully introduce each character, making sure you don’t feel lost. There are hidden surprises throughout, but they aren’t essential to understanding the story—they’re just for fun. Our main goal is to tell a compelling story, and that’s what we’re most passionate about.
You don’t need to be familiar with previous storylines or ‘Legend of Vox Machina’ to enjoy this. If you’re into spy thrillers, slow-paced dramas, romance, or classic films like ‘The Maltese Falcon,’ you’ll likely love it. This is a self-contained story, and after watching it, you’ll probably be intrigued to learn more about the wider world it’s set in.
We created this show with the fans in mind, specifically aiming to appeal to everyone. We really want it to be enjoyable even for people who don’t play games – even my own mom! We focused on making the characters compelling and relatable. If people connect with the characters on a personal level, the setting or genre doesn’t matter as much – they’ll feel emotionally invested. That’s what we were aiming for.
