Okay, so The Outer Worlds 2 is finally here, and I’ve been following all the reactions! Critics seemed to really like it, giving it around an 84 on Metacritic, which made me super excited. But now that more players like me have had a chance to play, the user score is a lot lower – around a 6.6 out of 10. It’s really interesting to see such a difference between what reviewers thought and what players are actually experiencing, and I’m curious to find out why!
It’s common for critics and players to have different opinions, but the gap between them is sometimes surprisingly large. Initial reviews, including one from ComicBook, highlighted the game’s strong design and refined presentation. Many reviewers also thought the sequel felt more engaging than the original, due to a bigger game world and better performance. However, a lot of fans who enjoyed the first Outer Worlds game aren’t as enthusiastic, and some are calling this new installment a letdown.
Some The Outer World Fans Aren’t Sold On Its Sequel
Early reactions to The Outer Worlds 2 on Metacritic, based on hundreds of player reviews, suggest some concerns. Many players found the companions less engaging than those in the original game. The game’s humor also didn’t resonate as well with fans, with some missing the “silly charm” of the first Outer Worlds title.
Okay, so the game’s overall score of 6.6 is a bit misleading, I think. It seems like a few really harsh reviews are dragging it down. A lot of us fans are pretty bummed about the story, the characters, and how empty the world feels. But it’s not all bad! Over on Steam, it’s actually getting a ‘Very Positive’ rating, and that’s based on over 2,200 reviews. That feels like a much better idea of what people really think than the smaller number of reviews on Metacritic – just around 200 or so.
Players are enjoying the RPG sequel, praising its improvements over the original game. The combat and movement feel smoother, and the Flaws system is even more engaging. However, even positive reviews mention that the writing isn’t quite as strong as in The Outer Worlds, particularly when it comes to the characters you team up with.
What’s really impressive is that, unlike many other PC RPGs on Steam, this game isn’t being flooded with complaints about performance issues. Obsidian seems to have done a great job optimizing it, which is something a lot of RPGs released this year have struggled with. While people have different opinions about the gameplay and story, the game definitely runs smoothly.
I’m super excited to finally be playing The Outer Worlds 2! It’s out on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and the best part is, it was included with Xbox Game Pass right from the start, so I didn’t even have to buy it!
