Crunchyroll’s Previous A.I. Drama
Crunchyroll’s CEO, Rahul Purini, recently told Forbes that the streaming service won’t be using artificial intelligence to generate subtitles or replace voice actors. He emphasized that they view these professionals as essential storytellers. While Crunchyroll will use AI and machine learning to improve things like content recommendations and search results – enhancing the viewer experience – they are committed to keeping AI out of the creative side of production to preserve authenticity.
It’s no surprise that many anime fans haven’t embraced AI technology lately. Concerned about protecting the artists and creators in the industry, Japan’s Nippon Anime and Film Culture Association (NAFCA) recently released a statement outlining their worries. They explained that if AI is used to create new content – for example, a character combining elements from Doraemon, Gundam, and Son Goku – they won’t allow it to be used freely, even with royalty payments. Their main concern is that there’s currently no fair way to share profits or get approval from the original creators whose work is being used to generate these new creations, even if those creations become highly profitable.
