The creator of Fullmetal Alchemist has a new anime available on Crunchyroll, and it’s quickly becoming the standout show of the Spring season, thanks to a shocking twist in the very first episode. With the Spring 2024 anime season now underway, many exciting new shows and returning favorites have premiered. While there are still plenty of anime to come, this one has already made a fantastic first impression that will be hard to beat.
The new anime series Daemons of the Shadow Realm, based on a manga by Fullmetal Alchemist creator Hiromu Arakawa, premiered this Spring and has already made a splash. The first episode featured a surprising twist that immediately grabbed viewers’ attention. We’ll break down all the spoilers ahead, but be warned – read on at your own risk if you haven’t seen it yet!
Daemons of the Shadow Realm Premieres With Surprise Twist

Daemons of the Shadow Realm centers around Yuru and his sister, Asa, who live in a secluded village. Their lives are unusual from the start: anyone who leaves the village never returns, and Asa is mysteriously kept hidden behind a gate. The story hints that there’s a crucial reason for keeping Asa secluded, but the details remain unclear.
Life in Yuru’s village is usually peaceful, but everything changes when they’re attacked by creatures the villagers first think are dragons. It’s soon discovered that the village exists in a separate timeline, and a military force arrives intending to destroy it—including Yuru’s sister. Just when Yuru is left reeling with questions, a mysterious stranger appears, claiming to be his sister. However, that’s not even the biggest reveal, as the series Daemons of the Shadow Realm quickly introduces its unique magic system.
What’s Going on With Daemons of the Shadow Realm?
The episode opens with a village destroyed by a military attack, but it’s soon discovered that the real threat comes from powerful monsters the attackers can summon. When Yuru is rescued, we learn his village was actually holding two of these creatures, ready to be controlled by him. By the end of the episode, Yuru gains access to these monsters, called Daemons. What makes the story compelling is the surprising contrast between its serious and fantastical elements.
The unexpected reveal that Yuru is currently living in our time, combined with the shocking and violent destruction of his village, immediately grabs your attention and makes you want to see what happens next. With two more seasons planned, there’s plenty more story to come. Hopefully, this series can achieve the same level of success as the beloved Fullmetal Alchemist.
