After nearly ten years since it first appeared as a manga, Witch Hat Atelier is now available as an anime on Crunchyroll with the Spring 2026 season. Although announced in 2022 and originally planned for release in 2025, production took longer – and viewers can easily see why! The anime has become one of the most popular new series this year, thanks to its beautiful animation which perfectly captures the detailed artwork from the original manga. The story is based on Kamone Shirahama’s acclaimed fantasy manga, which has been published in Kodansha’s Morning Two magazine since July 2016.

The anime is currently planned to have just one season with 13 episodes. The first season is about halfway through, and the show has recently added four new voice actors to the cast. Notably, Junichi Suwabe, well-known for his role as Ryomen Sukuna in Jujutsu Kaisen, is among the new additions – he’s become a very popular villain voice actor recently.

The story takes place in a magical fantasy world where only certain people are born with the power to become witches. Magic exists in everyday life, but very few actually wield it. Coco, an ordinary girl who dreams of being a witch, helps out at her mother’s dress shop – knowing she’ll likely never achieve her dream.

Her dream finally becomes reality when she encounters Qifrey, a skilled witch who visits her mother’s shop. After accidentally causing a significant incident, she discovers a long-held secret about witches. Seeking his assistance in tracking down someone using dangerous magic, Qifrey invites her to train at his Atelier and become a witch herself. But the path ahead won’t be easy, as she ventures into the mysterious and often harsh world of witchcraft.

Urano Motosu was passionate about books and dreamed of working as a librarian. Sadly, she died in an accident before she could pursue her career. In her final moments, she wished for one thing: to be able to read more books in the next life. When she wakes up, she finds herself reborn as Myne, a weak five-year-old girl in a world where books are incredibly rare because they don’t have printing technology. Despite getting a second chance at life, she’s disappointed by the lack of reading material.

Before mass production, books were painstakingly handwritten, making them incredibly expensive and accessible only to the wealthy nobility. This sets the stage for Myne’s story – her passion for reading drives her to create more books herself.
