Dead by Daylight Graphical and Animation Overhaul Planned Instead of Sequel

After ten years, Dead by Daylight is starting to look a little dated. While many developers would create a sequel to update an older game, Behaviour Interactive has different plans. Instead of making Dead by Daylight 2, they’re planning a complete visual and animation makeover for the original game.

During its anniversary event, Behaviour Interactive announced a complete overhaul of the game, currently planned for late 2027, though the timeline is subject to change. This update will be handled by a separate team, ensuring ongoing support for the existing game isn’t affected. The studio previewed vastly improved character models and more realistic facial animations – including a particularly detailed look at a Survivor being hooked – which highlighted how dated the current graphics appear.

Dead by Daylight 2 Isn’t Currently in the Cards

According to creative director Dave Richard, there are many ways to create scary experiences. Their goal is to build fear and suspense using strong visuals, graphics, and a deeply immersive world. They’re currently upgrading their tools to achieve a higher level of immersion, making the challenges feel more personal and frightening for players.

So, they’re really going all-out with this update! It’s not just little tweaks – they’re overhauling characters, giving everyone new hair, and completely revamping the maps. They’re even messing with the atmosphere, adding things like fog and mist to make it feel more immersive. Plus, the character animations are getting a big upgrade. And get this – they’re planning to add a proper weather system with light and heavy rain, even snow! They’re also touching up the audio, though they haven’t said much about exactly what they’re changing there yet.

José Ramos, the executive producer, explained why they chose this approach instead of creating a sequel, echoing previous statements from Behaviour Interactive.

I’ve seen the question about DBD2 pop up constantly over the years, and honestly, the team and I have always been against starting from scratch. Why? Because it wouldn’t be fair to you guys. We’re talking about losing all your progress, all the perks you’ve unlocked, and everything you’ve bought – we’re not willing to make you lose that! So, instead of making a whole new game, we’re focusing on making DBD itself even better and building on what we already have.

Richard explained this change aims to make the next decade of Dead by Daylight even stronger than its first ten years. The goal is to build a more solid base for the game and fully realize its original vision.

The game is getting a major visual overhaul, but it probably won’t be available on older consoles like the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. This new look also helps the developers avoid renegotiating licensing agreements for characters they’ve borrowed from other franchises, which would be necessary if they released a completely new game.
