As a dedicated cinephile, I’d say Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, is undeniably the epitome of X-Men leadership and his appearance is equally iconic. His unique ability to unleash optic blasts from his eyes necessitates the constant use of ruby quartz lenses to manage his mutant power. Whether these lenses are sunglasses for everyday life or battle visors during heroic moments, they’re an integral part of his persona.
However, it’s not just about the glasses; Cyclops has sported a variety of looks since his debut in 1963. Gold and yellow have been his signature colors, a style that many might find challenging to pull off yet he carries with effortless panache.
Scott takes advantage of being a mutant to head up various teams of the X-Men. A great leader should always have an impeccable uniform, and Cyclops has consistently managed this. Even with designs reminiscent of the early days, he’s never failed. Whether it’s his gold or silver visor, Cyclops remains timelessly stylish. Here are some of his most striking, almost unbelievable appearances.
7) “From the Ashes”
As a die-hard X-Men fan, I’m thoroughly enjoying Scott’s latest appearance in the series. The blend of his ’90s style with subtle hints of his original costume is an intriguing concept that keeps me engaged. What truly makes it stand out is the armor-like feel to the outfit, which adds a unique touch. Despite its many appealing aspects, it falls towards the bottom of my list due to its similarity to previously seen designs.
In the captivating X-Men series by Jed Mckay, I’ve come across an outstanding look, primarily associated with Cyclops. This particular style has been making waves in the current collection of X-Books and it truly highlights the essence of the character. Here’s to wishing that this iconic costume continues to grace our comic book pages for a long time!
6) Young Cyclops in All-New X-Men
In an intriguing spin from Brian Michael Bendis’ series, one of the two Cyclops takes after the youthful appearance of Cyclops, as seen in All New X-Men. Since the original five returned to their future timeline, they had previously worn their traditional costumes and later switched to these new outfits. Interestingly, all team members adopted color schemes reminiscent of X-Factor, creating a heartwarming tribute to this squad. The revised suit for Cyclops beautifully combines his multiple X-Factor looks and improves upon them as well.
In the TV show X-Factor, he retained his mask but wore blue jumpsuits, either featuring a large yellow “X” or white ones. The yellow version didn’t sit well, but the white looked more suitable. However, the gold visor detracted from it. Surprisingly, the gold visor ended up complementing the white X-Factor suit, and I appreciate that touch greatly. It’s a striking appearance from an ordinary time period in the series.
5) Krakoa
We present Krakoa’s Cyclops, harkening back to a classic era. Sporting a dark navy blue base with subtle gray accents and a silver visor, this outfit gives Cyclops a more subdued, yet effective, appearance. The silver visor has always been Cyclops’ signature touch, and it could have improved some of his past costumes as well.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I must admit that the refreshed design is just the right fit. The Krakoa revamp beautifully encapsulates the essence of its predecessors, a testament to the timeless appeal it held for so many. It’s only fitting that his new look mirrors this rich history.
4) Revolution
From the era of Bendis, we find the Revolution outfit of Cyclops. After undergoing a transformation with a questionable character development and a darker aspect, this costume is a testament to those changes. It symbolizes how Cyclops might have appeared if he were part of the Hellions instead of the X-Men, and it suited the younger Cyclops well during that period. Interestingly, the absence of the visor seems more fitting than I initially thought.
Although this outfit was quite impressive, it didn’t help the storyline at the time. The suit fit well with the character’s heel turn and served as a darker version of Cyclops, but it was an unusual pick for the main comic book. If this had been set in an “Age of Apocalypse”-like timeline, it would have been ideal. Regardless, it represented a solid midpoint costume for Scott.
3) Phoenix Force
As Scott, who’s wed to one of the most potent entities, he’s assumed the role of Phoenix previously. This time around, his appearance bears a striking resemblance to New 52 Nightwing, and it’s arguably one of his best looks yet. Embracing the moniker “Slim” wholeheartedly, this version remains stylish, despite being part of a less-than-impressive Bendis narrative. My sole visual gripe is that the visor seems slightly too bulky, but that’s purely subjective.
I believe it’s unique because it’s the only one that has a sculpted chin section, too, which I find quite stylish due to its minimalistic design.
2) Astonishing X-Men
The remarkable appearance is arguably one of Scott’s finest to date. Reintroducing the iconic costumes following the underestimated New X-Men designs feels like a heartwarming return. With the traditional blue or black with gold accents, it’s an impressive update on the original design. The suit also exudes leadership in addition to simply looking stylish and comfortable.
1. If our favorite choice wasn’t available, this would undoubtedly be his standout costume. If he also dons the silver visor, it would be ideal for me, but I might still go against the grain and choose it. However, nothing beats the subsequent entry in this case.
2. Without our preferred selection, this costume would clearly be the best choice. Adding the silver visor to the mix would make it perfect for me, but I’d probably buck the trend and select it if given the chance. Nevertheless, there’s nothing that surpasses the next entry.
1) Jim Lee’s Design
Was there ever any question that Jim Lee’s design for X-Men #1 wouldn’t take first place? It’s likely the costume most of us think of when we think of Scott. Not only was it the suit for the relaunch, but also the one used in the cartoon, which ignited a lot of children’s interest in the X-Men. From the chest belt to the open cowl that allows his hair to flow freely, it’s his best costume and there’s no real competition.
In this setting, the blend of blue and yellow is simply perfect, just as Lee’s work often is. Given his skill, if Cyclops were to reprise this appearance, he’d undoubtedly receive instant acclaim. There’s a hint of nostalgia in the design, but it would certainly be visually appealing.
