Science SARU, an animation studio founded in 2013, has become well-known for creating visually stunning anime with compelling stories. While their 2024 adaptation of the Shonen Jump+ series Dandadan has gained recent attention, Science SARU has a history of producing award-winning films and series. One of their upcoming projects is an anime adaptation of Tomato Soup’s acclaimed manga, Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia. This anime was selected for the Annecy Film Festival 2026 TV Films Competition and was previewed in a recent promotional video showcasing its beautiful animation and story. It’s set to premiere in July 2026 as part of the summer season, with a specific release date to be announced later. The project boasts a talented team, including Naoko Yamada, director of the critically acclaimed film A Silent Voice, as general director, and Abel Gongora as director. Character design will be handled by Kenichi Yoshida, who has experience working with the famous Studio Ghibli.
What Is The Plot of Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia?
The story takes place in the 13th-century Mongol Empire, the largest empire the world had ever seen, ruled by Genghis Khan. A young girl named Sitara is lost and alone, separated from her mother and forced to leave her home. Unable to care for herself, she ends up in a slave market until a family of scholars rescues her and provides her with an education.
The Mongol Empire is constantly growing through invasions, impacting the lives of people everywhere. When their reach extends to Sitara’s town, her quiet life is shattered, and her fate takes an unexpected turn.
Where Will Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia Be Streaming?
Currently, it’s unknown where you’ll be able to stream the anime; it will only air on TV Asahi and its partner stations in Japan for now. The anime will be featured at AnimeJapan 2026, taking place at Tokyo Big Sight on March 28th and 29th, 2026. We expect to learn more about where to watch the series, including streaming options, at the convention.
The manga is published in Akita Shoten’s Souffle digital magazine, and currently has five volumes available in Japan. Before the anime premieres, the manga, created by Tomato Soup, will start being released again on March 25th, 2026. It had previously paused publication in October 2025 due to the author’s maternity leave, and briefly returned in February 2025 before going on hold again.
