Daredevil: Born Again season 2 ending explained – Kingpin’s fate is a grave injustice

**Warning: contains full spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episode 8.**

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again finished in an unexpected way, leaving Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) fate uncertain and allowing Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) to avoid consequences for his actions.

Honestly, the entire season felt like a long setup for the ultimate face-off between these rivals, and it finally happened! It all went down right after that incredibly intense trial involving Karen Page – Deborah Ann Woll absolutely killed it, by the way.

The season 2 finale of Born Again, called The Southern Cross, will significantly impact Matt, but the outcome for New York’s unpredictable mayor – previously known as Kingpin – might not satisfy all viewers.

Despite all the anticipation and worry surrounding its release, the main villain in Daredevil: Born Again receives a surprisingly mild consequence for his incredibly cruel and violent actions. It leaves you wondering if this is truly how his story concludes.

Here’s our breakdown of the surprising ending to Daredevil: Born Again season 2, covering what happened to Kingpin, Matt Murdock’s huge decision, and whether we might see The Defenders team up again.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 ending explained – Kingpin’s fate is a grave injustice

As a huge fan of the Daredevil series, I have to say the second season of Born Again really delivered with its finale. The climax takes place at a New York courthouse, and it’s not just the action that’s gripping – the whole season builds to a point where the relationship between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk is irrevocably changed. It’s a powerful ending that really leaves its mark.

Before the riot started, Matt risked everything to help Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) fight false accusations brought against her by Mayor Fisk’s dishonest officials. He made a huge sacrifice to defend her.

He dramatically revealed himself as Daredevil to everyone in the courtroom and the press, then used this moment to deliver powerful testimony against the criminal formerly known as Kingpin.

After Karen was found not guilty and Fisk’s reputation was seriously harmed, it looked like a major win for everyone trying to take down the power structure in New York City.

Everything changed when reports of a shooting surfaced, forcing the building into lockdown. Fisk seized this moment to send a final message to his remaining followers, urging them to stay loyal and fight against those trying to overthrow him.

BB Urich (Genneya Walton) cleverly answers the message with a humorous imitation, effectively reducing its power. However, the speed at which she creates these videos – writing, filming, and editing them – feels unrealistic and stands out as one of the season’s biggest stretches.

Honestly, watching the film, I was struck by how the withdrawal of forces led to complete chaos. It reminded me a lot of the January 6th attack on the Capitol – just a huge wave of angry people descending on the area, looking for someone to blame. It was a really unsettling parallel.

Even though Fisk still has a few loyal agents from the Anti-Vigilante Task Force, many New Yorkers are determined to stop him. However, he easily defeats anyone who tries to challenge him.

As Kingpin moved through the courthouse, he violently attacked many protestors, leaving a trail of injuries and death. He arrived at the main lobby covered in blood, his white suit ruined. Eventually, the sheer number of people overwhelmed him.

Okay, so Daredevil finally stops getting beaten up and then, get this, he doesn’t even throw Kingpin in jail! He basically just tells him to pack his bags and get out of New York, permanently. It was a surprisingly chill way to end things, honestly. Like, ‘peace out, never come back!’

Considering all the terrible things Fisk has done this season, do you think that punishment is just?

After years of fighting crime, Daredevil rarely kills, and he’s been determined not to make an exception even with Wilson Fisk. So, it makes sense that he’s trying to end their conflict without resorting to lethal force.

Allowing Fisk to simply rebuild his power somewhere else is just as troubling as executing him. While he’s been barred from New York and lost his official position, he’s essentially been given the freedom to start over.

It seems Matt Murdock believes Wilson Fisk can get away with any crime, as long as it doesn’t happen in his immediate territory.

The last time we see Kingpin, he’s standing on a beach, missing the city he was forced to leave. Despite being presented as the powerful and emotional end to a ten-year story arc, the scene doesn’t feel truly rewarding or fair.

It’s as if everyone – Matt, Karen, the police, the District Attorney, and even the show’s writers – has quickly forgotten the many murders and criminal schemes he was involved in over the last year.

To make things even more confusing, pictures leaked from the set seem to confirm Kingpin will return next year. It makes you wonder what the purpose of all this is, doesn’t it?

What will happen to Matt Murdock in season 3?

After the dramatic events at the courthouse, Matt Murdock must deal with the serious repercussions of revealing his identity as Daredevil.

While Matt successfully ended Fisk’s control over the city, he’s now completely lost the legal and physical safety that came with keeping his identity a secret.

After briefly experiencing a normal life with Karen, Matt is arrested by the police for his past as a vigilante. Accepting his fate, he doesn’t resist and goes to jail peacefully.

Matt is in a dangerous position because the criminals he helped convict might now try to get revenge.

If you’re curious about what Daredevil’s time in prison might look like in season 3 of Born Again, many fans believe the comic book story The Devil in Cell-Block D by Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark could be a major inspiration.

Luke Cage returns – but will The Defenders reunite?

Mike Colter is returning as Luke Cage in the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again. This is his first time playing the character since the Marvel/Netflix series ended in 2019.

There were rumors Luke Cage and Jessica Jones were still a couple and that Danielle was their daughter, just like in the comics. Colter’s return confirms this, which is great news for fans.

The biggest question still unanswered is what he and the mysterious Mr. Charles (Matthew Lillard) have been doing. It seems they’ve been finding people with special abilities to carry out secret operations abroad.

As the current season concludes, Luke is relieved of his duties and replaced by Benjamin Poindexter, also known as Bullseye (played by Wilson Bethel). This change allows the hero of Harlem to take on a more significant part in the upcoming third season of Born Again.

A recently leaked set photo featuring actors Krysten Ritter, Charlie Cox, and Finn Jones—dressed as their characters Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand (Iron Fist)—has sparked excitement among fans that Netflix’s canceled series The Defenders might be revived.

It’s currently unknown what these three characters are planning, but they may be stepping in to protect New York City now that Hell’s Kitchen is without its usual hero. Evidence suggests Jessica Jones has permanently reopened her detective agency, Alias Investigations, indicating she’s committed to staying.

Heather Glenn (Margarita Levieva) is a dangerous woman on the verge of becoming a full-fledged villain. This is when she first becomes the Muse, but the question remains: will she truly follow in the footsteps of the previous, violent figure who held the title?

Season 3 of Born Again is being filmed right now in New York City, meaning we should have updates soon.
