Despite medical efforts to revive her, Vanessa ultimately succumbs to her injuries. Now, Ayelet Zurer is sharing her thoughts on playing Vanessa and how she reacted to the character’s fate.

Ayelet Zurer Had No Idea Vanessa’s Death Was Coming

You know, as a big fan of the show, I was shocked when Vanessa died, and apparently, Ayelet Zurer, who plays her, was just as surprised! She told Variety that the showrunners actually had to call her to explain the decision. She said everyone on the team felt they needed to personally justify it, and they were all really upset about it. But she understood it from a story perspective – they needed that moment to really push Wilson Fisk, Kingpin, over the edge and show a whole new side of him.

Actress Ayelet Zurer has portrayed Vanessa Marianna since her first appearance in the Netflix series Daredevil in 2015. Initially a smaller part, her role expanded significantly by Season 3, making her Kingpin’s wife. This version of Vanessa Fisk differs from the comics and other adaptations, like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; she’s depicted as a powerful partner who actively supports her husband. However, this also meant she faced the same dangers as Kingpin, and unfortunately, Bullseye proved to be a threat she couldn’t overcome.

After ten years of building a character and performing, saying goodbye to the role was incredibly difficult for Zurer. She described it as a deeply emotional experience, like letting go of a decade’s worth of work.

What Will Kingpin Do After Vanessa’s Death?

As the second half of Daredevil: Born Again unfolds, a key question is how far Wilson Fisk will fall now that Vanessa is no longer with him. However, actress Ayelet Zurer, who plays Vanessa, doesn’t believe he’s simply a heartbroken man turning evil. Instead, she views Vanessa as just one piece in Kingpin’s overwhelming desire for power and control—a desire that likely always put her in danger.

According to Zurer, wielding power is inherently dangerous. For Kingpin, the pursuit of greater power and control isn’t about practical gains, but a deep-seated emotional need – a way to try and fill an inner void. It’s a psychological drive, meaning no amount of power or control will ever truly satisfy him.
