Darren Day talks 30 years of You Bet! and his fifth engagement: “I won’t be buying any more rings”

Darren Day had a great June in 1996. He was already starring in two successful West End musicals, and then suddenly became famous nationwide when he took over hosting the popular Saturday night TV show, You Bet! Thirty years later, he still finds it a bit surprising how it all happened.

I was doing odd jobs on construction sites and singing in pubs and clubs to earn money. My grandfather had been a performer in vaudeville, but he never got to sing at the London Palladium. So, I auditioned there just to be able to tell him I’d performed on that famous stage. I hadn’t had any formal singing training, but Andrew Lloyd Webber ended up casting me in the role of Joseph.

After appearing in the musical Copacabana and a few other shows, Les Dennis got a call from his manager about You Bet!. He thought he’d just be making a guest appearance. “I said, ‘Sure, which day?’ Then my manager told me they wanted me to actually host the show.”

On June 1st, 1996, former snooker player Steve Davis took over hosting duties on a hugely popular TV show, following in the footsteps of Matthew Kelly (who had previously replaced Bruce Forsyth). He co-hosted with Jet from the show Gladiators. ITV announced the change with a lot of publicity, and the reveal was quite dramatic: Steve remembers arriving at the London studio on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with Jet riding behind him – a very typical showbiz moment!

It’s no surprise, considering the show was watched by between eight and twelve million people each week. As Day recalls, he’d already gained some recognition from his role as Joseph and his music, but ‘Coronation Street’ made him a household name. This success happened at the same time as a top-20 hit song and a record-breaking stage performance in ‘Summer Holiday’. He remembers it as a wonderful time, and says he always appreciated it.

Day also has fond memories of a game show where celebrities wagered on whether ordinary people could complete difficult and unusual challenges. He recalls one contestant who, while blindfolded, could correctly identify a car’s make, model, and year simply by the sound of its door closing. It’s easy to see why the show was so popular.

Following the success of his first two series, Day hosted another show for ITV called Don’t Try This at Home!. However, around that time, his personal life became more newsworthy than his career. The British tabloids spent the next ten years reporting on his many relationships – he was rumored to have been engaged seven times! He jokes that it was actually only four engagements, but he’s currently engaged again, making it five. He’s very happy with his current partner, Sophie, and insists he won’t be getting married again after her.

He’s still performing and is currently rehearsing for a role as Sam Phillips, a 1950s American record producer, in the play Million Dollar Quartet, which will be staged in Cirencester.

Looking back, it’s been a strange ride,” Day reflects. “I had five great years as a rising star in acting, but then I really lost my way. I was just a young guy from a working-class background suddenly given a lot of opportunities. Still, hosting ‘You Bet!’ is something I’m incredibly proud of, and I’ll always cherish that experience.
