Darth Vader Versus Darth Maul is the Star Wars Duel We’ve Waited 27 Years For

After 27 years, the first season of Maul – Shadow Lord finally delivers the lightsaber duel fans have been waiting for. Darth Maul made a strong impression when he first appeared in The Phantom Menace nearly three decades ago, but his story initially seemed to end with his death at the hands of Qui-Gon Jinn. Recognizing this was a mistake, George Lucas brought him back in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, establishing Maul as one of the greatest villains in the Star Wars universe. Despite all of that, one question has lingered for 27 years.

Fans have long wondered what a fight between Darth Maul and Darth Vader would look like. While older Star Wars stories hinted at this clash, and the Star Wars Rebels series briefly teased it before focusing on a reunion between Vader and Ahsoka, the new comic Maul – Shadow Lord finally delivers the epic duel we’ve been waiting for – and it doesn’t disappoint.

Darth Vader is So Much More Powerful Than Maul

It’s no surprise that Darth Vader is far more powerful than Maul. Even after his injuries and transformation, Vader retains incredible Force abilities, stemming from his destiny as the Chosen One. Palpatine recognized this immense power and kept Vader alive, unlike Maul, who was easily discarded.

This is Darth Vader at his most frightening. He’s a stealthy and deadly opponent, moving silently and only announcing his presence with the sound of his breathing. His reactions are lightning-fast, thanks to his connection to the Force and the cybernetics that keep him alive. While his lightsaber skills aren’t as graceful as they were when he was Anakin Skywalker, he doesn’t need flashy moves anymore. His mechanical parts give him incredible strength, allowing him to overpower opponents with sheer force. It actually takes a combined effort from a Jedi and a former Sith student just to defend against his attacks.

The fight between Darth Vader and Maul is shockingly one-sided – Vader dominates easily. Maul would have lost instantly if not for a temporary team-up with Devon Izara and Master Eeko-Dio Daki. Ultimately, Vader defeats Eeko-Dio Daki, and Maul helps his apprentice, Devon, escape. Even Maul realizes he’s outmatched and flees when Vader arrives.

Maul and Vader Are Twisted Mirrors of One Another

Maul and Darth Vader share some unsettling parallels. Both were trained to eliminate Jedi, and both suffered defeats at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi. While Maul was kept alive by his intense hatred, he was left severely injured, requiring robotic replacements for the lower half of his body. The comics have repeatedly demonstrated that these cybernetic parts are Maul’s biggest vulnerability, with enemies targeting his legs to bring him down. Darth Vader employs a similar strategy, and it proves even more effective – probably because Anakin Skywalker was a skilled engineer and understands mechanics well.

It’s amazing to watch their fight, especially when you remember Darth Vader also lost to Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan always said Vader was “more machine than man,” and honestly, even more so than Maul! But even with all that, the fight just isn’t fair. Maul clearly doesn’t stand a chance, and you can tell he knows it the second he realizes he’s not facing an Inquisitor.

Maul – Shadow Lord Subtly Gives Darth Vader a Terrifying New Power

The finale of Maul – Shadow Lord hints that Darth Vader has developed a new Force ability, likely taught to him by Palpatine. Master Daki can apparently foresee the arrival of Inquisitors because of their connection to the dark side. However, neither Jedi nor Sith can detect Vader’s approach. He appears suddenly and unexpectedly, even smashing through rock to launch surprise attacks. This feels strikingly similar to the plot of Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, a 1978 novel by Alan Dean Foster.

Force concealment is a Sith Lord’s most powerful ability in combat. It’s likely the same method Palpatine used to hide his dark side from the Jedi, and he apparently taught it to his apprentice. It’s probably essential for someone as strong with the dark side as Darth Vader to catch a Jedi off guard. This power makes him incredibly dangerous, as no one, not even Darth Maul, can anticipate his attacks.
