DC Can Undo Its Most Controversial Superman Twist in Years

DC Comics has an opportunity to fix a long-standing issue for Superman fans: the aging up of Jon Kent. This change, made by writer Brian Michael Bendis during his run on the Superman comics, saw Superman’s son suddenly grow older after a strange adventure to another Earth. This decision upset many fans who particularly enjoyed the earlier stories featuring a younger Jon Kent and his adventures with Damian Wayne as the ‘Super Sons,’ and they haven’t forgotten it.

In Superman Unlimited #11, Dan Slott and Lucas Meyer essentially have DC Comics reversing course. The story centers on Jon Kent battling Master Txyz, a time-traveling demon who wants to prevent Jon from defeating him later in life. After revealing to Jon that his actions have little lasting effect on the DC Universe’s timeline, Jon decides to change the future and become the hero known as Tomorrow Man – the very hero Txyz was trying to stop. Defeated by this paradox, Txyz gives Jon a younger version of himself, rescued from just before his imprisonment on Earth-3.

DC Comics is This Close to Undoing Jon’s Controversial Aging Up

Changing Jon’s age sparked controversy not only because it meant losing a version of the character fans cherished, but also because of how that change happened. For years, Jon was held captive in a volcano on another Earth, controlled by a villain who resembled his father – a deeply disturbing scenario for many readers. Fans hoped this traumatic experience could be reversed, bringing back the Superboy they remembered. However, DC seemed determined to keep Jon as an adult.

DC Comics is facing a tricky situation with Jon Kent’s age. They’ve hinted at potentially changing the established storyline, which raises questions about the future of the character. They could keep the younger version of Jon in the present, but that creates a logical problem since the older Jon wouldn’t then make sense. Alternatively, they could send the younger Jon back to his original time, but fans likely wouldn’t appreciate putting him through years of hardship again so soon after his previous difficult experiences.

I wasn’t thrilled with the decision to make Jon older, so I’m glad to see things changing. I’m just wondering if DC will continue with this new direction, since we’ve seen young Jon appear in the present before. It seems like giving Jon the identity of the Tomorrow Man suggests the older version won’t be disappearing completely. However, I really think keeping young Jon around is a good idea. A lot of potential was lost when he was aged up, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with him now, even if it creates a paradox.
