DC Comics’ Weirdest Events, Ranked

Look, I’m a lifelong DC Comics enthusiast, so believe me, I get the appeal of a good, sprawling comic event. And honestly, a little weirdness is part of what makes comics great! But even as a devoted fan, I have to say DC sometimes takes things a bit too far. They’ve given us truly epic storylines like Crisis on Infinite Earths and Blackest Night, which were fantastic. But then, every now and then, they launch a huge event that just…makes some baffling choices. Characters will do things that are totally out of character, or the plot will take a turn you just don’t see coming. It’s not always a bad thing, but let’s be real: some DC events are just wonderfully, wonderfully strange.

I’m not saying these comics are bad – everyone has their favorites! But having read comics for most of my life, I can confidently say some storylines are pretty unexpected. Take Knight Terrors, which centers on the nightmares of heroes and villains, or Amazons Attack!, where warriors from Themyscira used bees to attack Washington D.C. I’m not criticizing anyone’s taste, but here are 5 of the strangest events in DC Comics history.

5. Knight Terrors

I found Knight Terrors a little more enjoyable than most readers, though it was definitely strange. One odd choice was setting a horror event in the summer instead of closer to Halloween. The main story unfolded over four issues, but most of the event took place within dream sequences featuring characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Joker. It didn’t feel like there were high stakes, and ultimately, it didn’t have a lasting impact – it only served to introduce a subplot for a character in Titans: Beast World.

4. Underworld Unleashed

The comic event Underworld Unleashed is best known for a particularly wild premise. It featured Neron, a powerful demon, offering DC’s villains a deal: increased power in exchange for their souls. While the event was interesting and led to some cool moments, the idea that villains would trade their immortal souls just to get stronger and defeat their enemies is pretty outlandish.

3. Amazons Attack!

The story arc Amazons Attack! doesn’t have many fans, and it’s easy to see why. It portrays Wonder Woman’s Amazonian sisters negatively. After Wonder Woman is imprisoned, the Amazons try to rescue her, but fans disliked how they were depicted, particularly her mother, Hippolyta. The arc is best remembered for the Amazons’ strange plan to use weaponized bees, which leads to a funny and unexpected scene of Batman looking horrified by them. It’s a very odd story and likely won’t appeal to serious Wonder Woman readers.

2. Emperor Joker

There’s something even scarier than the Joker himself: the Joker with nearly unlimited power. In the “Emperor Joker” story, he stole most of Mr. Mxyzptlk’s reality-warping abilities and became the absolute ruler of the world. And it was as disturbing and darkly funny as you’d expect. He did everything from repeatedly torturing and killing Batman to, unbelievably, consuming the entire country of China. Honestly, it’s surprising this storyline doesn’t get discussed more, because despite how strange it was, it was also really captivating.

1. Milk Wars

When discussing the strangest happenings in the DC Universe, Milk Wars always comes up. This event brought together DC’s main heroes with the characters from Gerard Way’s Young Animal series. A company called Retconn invaded the DC Universe with the goal of ‘improving’ the heroes—by brainwashing them with hypnotic milk—and then selling the altered universe for profit. While it sounds incredibly strange, Milk Wars was a surprisingly well-told story that celebrated the fact that weirdness is a core part of what makes the DC Universe unique.
