DC Officially Redesigns Wonder Woman’s Most Iconic Weapon

Some superhero equipment is instantly recognizable – you can’t picture Batman without his utility belt, or Green Lantern without his ring. Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth is just as iconic. It’s a perfect fit for a hero dedicated to truth, as the lasso compels anyone bound by it to reveal what they know. This golden lasso is always with Wonder Woman, ready to make villains confess their secrets.

It’s wild to follow this version of Wonder Woman from the Absolute Universe – she’s so different! She’s a witch who was raised in Hell, and she doesn’t even have the Lasso of Truth. Instead, she uses three magical ropes. One, the Nemesis Lasso, basically punishes people for their bad deeds, and the Thysía rope actually changes whoever it touches. We hadn’t seen what the third rope, the Troika, did until now, but issue #19 finally revealed its power. And honestly? It’s a completely new take on the classic Lasso of Truth – it does something totally unexpected!

The Troika, the Lasso of Facing Reality

Okay, so Wonder Woman was having a really tough time with this undead version of Zatara. He was just way too powerful magically, overwhelming everything she tried. She ended up having to use this thing called the Troika to contain him, and it threw them both into this crazy, endless void with a crossroads. Basically, the Troika forced Zatara to confront a really painful decision he’d made years ago – choosing between his wife and his daughter. It turned out he’d never really accepted that choice, and that’s how Cale managed to control him. The Troika was like a test, forcing you to face a truth you’d been avoiding, and the only way out was to either accept it… or be consumed by it.

Staying true to Absolute’s style, this is a fresh spin on a classic concept. The Troika functions similarly to Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth, compelling opponents to confront a reality. But instead of revealing factual answers, this rope is a psychological test. It doesn’t tell Diana anything directly, but it exposes the inner thoughts and motivations of whoever is tied to it. The Troika aims to help people accept things they can’t change, allowing them to move forward. Think of it as a more rebellious version of the Lasso – and it’s brilliant.

Diana’s latest lasso is potentially her most powerful and risky, as she was briefly caught by its magic when Zatara and Zatanna got away. She warned that anyone who tries to use it will face serious repercussions. Unlike the Lasso of Truth, which helps people immediately, this new lasso, called the Troika, is designed to test them. While both lassos aim to reveal the truth, they do so in very different ways that reflect their specific purposes.
