DC Studios Has Big Plans (& They Include a New Justice League Movie)

The future plan for the upcoming DC Universe has been officially disclosed, and its end goal is a grand crossover movie featuring the Justice League. A recent article from the Wall Street Journal reveals the multi-year approach currently being implemented by DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. According to this strategy, they are already brainstorming the project that will link all movies and series together. The timeline for this plan kicks off with the upcoming release of Superman this weekend, and includes a consistent schedule where approximately two films and one animated series are released annually, alongside various TV shows. This pace will enable the new continuity to gradually introduce a diverse range of both familiar and lesser-known characters before they join forces for an epic team-up, creating the impression that the new DCU is a fully-developed universe.

The initial stage of the DCU blueprint, titled “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters,” has been showcasing the innovative aspirations and adaptability of the new studio. A film titled Supergirl, featuring Milly Alcock as a tough portrayal of the character, has completed production and is slated for release on June 26, 2026. Directed by Craig Gillespie, the movie will also introduce Jason Momoa as the bounty hunter Lobo in his DCU debut. Other previously announced projects are progressing with key creative personnel involved. The Lanterns series, destined for a 2026 release on Max and starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart respectively, has Ozark’s Chris Mundy serving as showrunner. Meanwhile, Andy Muschietti’s Batman film, titled The Brave and the Bold, which concentrates on Bruce Wayne and his son Damian, remains in development, although it temporarily took a backseat while the script was refined.

The lineup of upcoming films has grown with some unexpected titles, such as a low-cost, R-rated horror film titled “Clayface,” written by Mike Flanagan, scheduled for release in September 2026. Meanwhile, Ana Nogueira, who wrote “Supergirl,” is now penning a new “Teen Titans” movie, adding another significant DC group to the mix. Other projects like the prequel series “Paradise Lost” based on Max and James Mangold’s “Swamp Thing” are still in development, although progress might be slow. This diverse roster promises an exciting cinematic journey for the coming years.

Superman‘s High Praise Gives the DCU a Great Start

A cinematic universe’s success hinges on its initial installment, and James Gunn’s Superman has certainly set the bar high. This film has been lauded as a triumph by critics, boasting a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie’s confident, heartwarming, and sincere tone has struck a chord with viewers, being praised as a refreshing return to Superman’s optimistic essence. David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent has garnered particular acclaim, with critics appreciating his spot-on depiction of the hero’s kindness and humility while adding a contemporary touch to the character.

The surge of favorable critiques hasn’t yet translated into a blockbuster premiere at the box office, suggesting that audiences are open to this fresh take on DC. Following promising previews, estimates for the film’s domestic opening weekend have stabilized between $115 million and $135 million, with its global debut anticipated to surpass $200 million. Although these figures indicate a strong start, as Superman was a costly production with a significant marketing budget, it must continue to perform well at the box office in the coming weeks to secure its profitability.

Superman is now playing in theaters.
