The DC Universe is growing rapidly! This month sees the release of Supergirl, with many more projects planned for the future. Following successful launches like Superman (and previously, Creature Commands) and Season 2 of Peacemaker, things will really pick up in 2026. After Supergirl, we’ll see the HBO series Lanterns and a new movie called Clayface. Next year brings the sequel to Superman, titled Man of Tomorrow. This is a diverse and exciting lineup, but it’s only the first step for DCU co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
DC has several exciting projects in development. Besides the already announced Paradise Lost series focusing on Wonder Woman – with a possible appearance by Wonder Woman herself – The Batman: Part II is scheduled for release next year. They’re also working on their own version of Batman, currently called Batman: The Brave and the Bold. If these projects come together successfully, a Justice League movie could follow. At an event for the upcoming Supergirl film in Brazil, James Gunn confirmed plans are moving forward with Batman and discussed the potential for a Justice League team-up, as well as a new Superman spin-off featuring Jimmy Olsen (as reported by @GoodNerd23 on X).
He explained that while they’re planning for future team-up movies like a Justice League film, their current focus is on the projects they’ve already announced. These include Brave and the Bold, which will introduce Batman into the new DC Universe, and a Gorilla Grodd show for HBO starting production this year. They aren’t rushing into planning beyond that; getting the scripts and stories right is their priority. They want to tell well-crafted, high-quality stories, and having James Gunn lead DC Studios provides a huge benefit, allowing them to collaborate on these ambitious projects with characters they deeply respect.
James Gunn & Peter Safran Are Taking The Right Approach With The DCU’s Batman & Justice League
James Gunn and Peter Safran seem to be building the DC Universe with more care and planning than previous attempts. While they have projects in development, they’re wisely avoiding immediately jumping into big stories featuring characters like Batman and the Justice League. Rushing those storylines was a problem for the old DC movie universe, and it’s good to see the new team learning from that. Focusing on strong storytelling instead of just introducing popular heroes is exactly what fans want, even if it means waiting a bit longer to see them.
Andy Muschietti, known for directing the ‘IT’ films, is likely to direct the upcoming Batman movie, currently titled ‘Batman: The Brave and the Bold’. James Gunn recently mentioned the script wasn’t complete earlier this year, and it still isn’t. However, with another Batman film already planned for next year, there’s no immediate rush. If the script is finished by the end of this year, the movie could potentially be released in 2028 – following the release of ‘Man of Tomorrow’ in 2027 – though 2029 remains a possibility.
If that’s the sort of release timeline Batman is on, then it would mean we won’t be seeing the Justice League coming together until 2030 at the earliest, and perhaps even after that. Again, that’s not a bad thing, as it should focus on establishing the foundations of this universe before getting to such a massive team-up event. It needs the characters and stories in place to underpin it, after all.
Safran also shared some interesting details about the upcoming Gorilla Grodd series. The show, created by the team behind Netflix’s American Vandal, will be a mockumentary exploring various DC villains and hosted by Jimmy Olsen (played by Skyler Gisondo). While it’s been called the “Gorilla Grodd show,” that’s somewhat misleading – it was always intended to focus on the villains themselves, with Jimmy Olsen acting as the presenter who connects everything. It’s not primarily a show about Jimmy Olsen.
The project has a lot of potential with a talented team and a reasonable filming schedule. If filming begins this year, we can expect to see it on HBO and HBO Max around 2027, likely following the release of “Man of Tomorrow.”
Supergirl will be released on June 26th, with Lanterns following on August 16th. Clayface is scheduled for October 23rd, and Man of Tomorrow will arrive on July 9, 2027.
