Similar to the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, DC is developing both movies and TV shows. Coming soon to television is Lanterns, a new series that will revisit the Green Lantern universe – it’s been over a decade since the 2011 movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Described as a detective story in the style of True Detective, Lanterns looks like a promising addition to DC’s lineup. Fans are excited to find out when it will be released on HBO Max, but it seems like there will be a bit of a wait.
The hosts of the Green Lanterns Podcast recently contacted The Hollywood Reporter about something they noticed in the October edition of the Heat Vision newsletter. The newsletter mentioned Supergirl would be the next DC Universe project released. The podcast team wanted to know if that meant their Lanterns podcast would debut after the Supergirl film. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that was the plan, saying they now expect Lanterns to come out after Supergirl.
When Will Lanterns Release on HBO Max?

DC fans were hoping to see Lanterns debut in early 2026, bridging the gap between the second season finale of Peacemaker and the premiere of Supergirl. However, it now looks like the show won’t arrive on HBO Max until mid-year. With Supergirl scheduled for release on June 26, 2026, July is the earliest we can expect Lanterns. DC Studios and Warner Bros. likely want to give Supergirl some time to shine before shifting attention to Lanterns. While a firm release date isn’t set, a mid-to-late July launch for Lanterns seems plausible. We now know it will arrive before Clayface in September 2026.
The second season of House of the Dragon is currently slated for a June 2026 release on HBO Max. To avoid having two major shows premiere too close together, the premiere of Lanterns is likely to be pushed to later in the summer. HBO Max already has a strong lineup of programming planned for early 2026, including the Game of Thrones spin-off A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Season 2 of The Pitt, and Season 3 of Euphoria, so there aren’t many openings in the schedule. Delaying Lanterns until after Supergirl will also give the creative team more time to finish the extensive visual effects and complex scenes that a superhero show requires, ensuring the series is polished and ready for audiences.
With Peacemaker Season 2 debuting in late August, that timeframe could also work for the release of Lanterns. However, that timing might clash with the theatrical premiere of Clayface, so DC Studios and HBO Max are still figuring out the best release schedule. It’s worth remembering that other big franchises have successfully released new TV episodes close to movie releases – for instance, an episode of The Mandalorian Season 1 came out just before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker – and it didn’t negatively impact either one. Movies and TV shows are different experiences, and success is measured differently for each. Lanterns and Clayface wouldn’t compete with each other financially.
As a DC fan, I’m really excited, but also a little curious about how DCU will handle launching Supergirl, Clayface, and another project so close together – all within just a few months! We’ve seen Marvel and Star Wars sometimes release too much stuff, and people get burned out. James Gunn and Peter Safran have promised us quality over quantity, and fewer big movie releases each year, which is great. But this is still a lot of DC content hitting us quickly! I’m confident if everything is truly good, though, we’ll happily watch it all and stay engaged.
