Hideo Kojima, the director of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, has shared his reasons for not creating any additional content that would alter the game’s original storyline. In a chat with IndieWire, he discussed his preference for maintaining a game’s story as it was at its initial release when developing DLC, expansions, or updates.
As a dedicated gamer, I can attest to the fascinating nature of video games and their capacity for evolution even after they’ve been launched. Speaking from my own experience as a game creator, there are certain aspects that I firmly believe should remain untouched in my creations, such as the narrative. Drawing a parallel with George Lucas’s contentious alterations to the original Star Wars trilogy, I personally dislike the notion of tampering with something to make it seem “outdated”.
He pointed out that some elements in a story should remain untouched, as they are rooted in the specific time period from which they originated. For instance, altering certain aspects of a story is not recommended, similar to how George Lucas modernized Star Wars with computer-generated imagery (CG). However, such changes may be justified if it’s a new era, but he prefers not to modify anything that might alter the original period in which the story was introduced.
Instead, Kojima tends to focus his changes in his games primarily on enhancing accessibility and gameplay features. Additionally, he expressed that DLC isn’t an appealing area for him as it prevents a project from being deemed finished since continued work is required on it.
He clarified that the aspects of the gameplay he’s modifying include making certain items easier to use, enlarging the user interface, and other minor adjustments. He mentioned that while downloadable content (DLC) isn’t currently popular due to the risk of it becoming an endless task and never completing the project.
In the interview, Kojima revealed that he’s been closely monitoring player statistics for “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” and is also working to address minor issues that have come up. Additionally, he’s already begun developing his upcoming projects, namely “OD” and “Physint.” Notably, “Physint” is currently a solo endeavor for Kojima, while he’s collaborating with a team on “OD.
Recently, Kojima has been examining data from players around the world – their chosen weapons and travel routes. He also mentioned finding minor issues (or bugs) here and there, which he is currently addressing. In addition to this, he’s collaborating with his team on a new project called OD, while also single-handedly working on Physint at its early conceptual stage.
The sequel to Death Stranding titled “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach” was launched on PS5 in June. Since its release, it has received impressive feedback, with Kojima Productions sharing some intriguing statistics about the popular weapons used by players. Not too long ago, there was even a minor update for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. For more comprehensive details, feel free to read our game review.
