Denzel Washington’s 1990s Sci-Fi You Didn’t Know Existed is Headed to Tubi

Most movies starring big names like Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, and Kelly Lynch generate a lot of buzz. However, this 1995 sci-fi film largely flew under the radar and wasn’t well-received by critics or audiences. It currently has a low score on Rotten Tomatoes – just 30% from critics and 32% from viewers. Luckily, it’s coming to Tubi for free, so it’s worth checking out!

The movie Virtuosity follows Parker Barnes (Washington), an ex-police officer who’s in prison for killing the man who murdered his family. While incarcerated, he’s chosen to participate in testing a cutting-edge virtual reality program designed to catch SID 6.7 (Crowe), a digital criminal created using the profiles of hundreds of the world’s most dangerous offenders. However, SID escapes into the real world, and Barnes is the only one who can stop him before he commits more murders.

Virtuosity is the Wackiest Kind of Sci-Fi—and Most Underrated

Despite its many flaws, Virtuosity is a delightfully bad sci-fi movie – it’s over-the-top, completely predictable, and lacks originality. However, it’s strangely entertaining, though most critics would disagree. Mike LaSalle notes that Denzel Washington adds some much-needed realism, but ultimately the film feels disjointed and fails to engage the viewer. Eddie Harrison humorously points out that the movie’s vision of the future is so dated and earnest, it’s almost overwhelming.

Viewers were a little more forgiving of Virtuosity than critics, though neither group loved it. One viewer called it a “hilariously dated action flick” that’s “so bad it’s good,” especially praising the nightclub scene. Another viewer perfectly captured the movie, describing it as “The Matrix with a serial killer”—fun, over-the-top for the 90s, and featuring a good cast, despite a sometimes nonsensical plot.
