Destiny 3 Reportedly Isn’t in the Works at Bungie

Recent reports indicate that Bungie isn’t developing Destiny 3 at all. Just yesterday, Bungie announced it will stop supporting Destiny 2 with a final update coming in early June. Many dedicated fans initially hoped this meant Bungie was preparing to launch the next major Destiny game. However, it now appears that’s not the case, leaving players wondering what the company’s future plans are.

Bungie, the game studio behind Destiny 2, is expected to have layoffs soon now that development on the game has finished, according to Bloomberg. Remaining employees will focus on supporting Bungie’s new game, Marathon, or brainstorming ideas for future projects. While some of these new ideas might involve the Destiny universe, there’s no confirmation they will be greenlit.

According to Forbes, Bungie has proposed Destiny 3 on several occasions, but Sony hasn’t approved the project. The main reason appears to be Sony’s reluctance to invest the necessary funds and resources. Since Sony acquired Bungie in 2022, the studio has been losing money, leading Sony to reduce its valuation of the developer. Developing Destiny 3 and continuing to support Marathon would likely require Bungie to hire more staff, and Sony is currently unwilling to finance that expansion.

While there’s always a possibility of a Destiny 3 someday, it depends on how things go for Bungie. For that to happen, their new game, Marathon, would probably need to become very popular. If Marathon doesn’t succeed, Bungie’s next project will be even more important for the studio’s future.

Season 2 of Marathon starts on June 2nd! This is the first major update since the game launched, making it a great time for new players to start playing.
