Dante’s animated adaptation from Capcom’s video game series on Netflix, created by Adi Shankar, turned heads. The show was rich in content, quickly becoming one of Netflix’s largest original animated series. In fact, it didn’t take long for Netflix to greenlight a second season. Recently at Anime NYC 2021, Netflix spotlighted series like Splinter Cell, Blue Eye Samurai, Sakamoto Days, and Record of Ragnarok. However, they also unveiled the first trailer for Devil May Cry‘s second season.
If you’re not familiar with the narrative of Devil May Cry, it revolves around the protagonist, Dante, who operates a business specializing in demon extermination to combat supernatural hazards. Being the son of the legendary demon warrior Sparda, Dante possesses numerous skills that aid him in his mission. In the ongoing gaming series, Dante shares a complex relationship with his brother Virgil, who is poised for a significant role in the upcoming second season. Interestingly, the initial glimpse into Devil May Cry’s second season was not unveiled during this trailer but subtly shown in an Evanescence music video that was part of season one.

When Last We Left Dante
In the final episode of Devil May Cry’s first season, Dante successfully defeated the White Rabbit, the primary antagonist, who had an intricate past. However, moments after his victory, Dante was captured by DarkCom, a secretive government organization known for their ruthless tactics against demons. Locked up in the demon realm, Dante found himself powerless to prevent the US from launching an invasion on the parallel world, causing harm to the peaceful demon residents who sought coexistence.
From another perspective, the final episode of the last season introduced the viewers to Virgil, Dante’s brother, who is fighting against DarkCom to rescue demons being oppressed. As of now, a primary adversary has not been announced. In the first season, the character Arius, a video game villain, made his appearance in the demon world. Interestingly, this digital antagonist was initially introduced in the second installment of the “Devil May Cry” series, titled “Devil May Cry 2“, but he never reappeared in the franchise thereafter.
In the heat of this summer, Adi Shankar, creator of Devil May Cry, subtly teased what’s in store for the second season. His intention was to grow and broaden the Devil May Cry universe. He described Season 1 as a precursor, but Season 2 will take a different approach, both stylistically and tonally. Vergil is a key character who will play a significant role, making it almost like a new show altogether. Shankar’s ambitions are clear: he aims to surpass the popularity of Arcane, considering Arcane as setting money on fire (in terms of viewership), and he wishes to outshine that with Season 2 of Devil May Cry. He wants to show up to a tank fight with a water balloon, essentially guaranteeing victory because it’s an unconventional yet cool move.
