Be warned, this article contains major spoilers for the season finale of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. Gideon Adlon, who plays Devon Izara, discusses the character’s difficult choice in the final episode.
Throughout the season, Maul tried to convince Devon to join him, but she consistently refused. However, after witnessing the death of her mentor, Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki, she finally gave in. Seeing Darth Vader kill her teacher was devastating, and it unleashed her anger, allowing her to embrace the dark side and become Maul’s apprentice.
I was reading an interview with Sarah Adlon over on StarWars.com, and she talked about Lyra’s grief after Daki died. She explained that it really changes Lyra – like a switch flips, and we see a darker side emerge. It makes total sense to me, because anyone who’s experienced a loss like that changes, right? Adlon said grief brings out different sides of you, and the path you take afterward is never quite the same because you’re not the same person anymore.
Adlon explains that Devon felt a connection with Maul even before Daki’s death, a connection she didn’t share with Daki or the Jedi. While it’s not romantic love, Devon sees Maul as a father figure, and Adlon intends to explore the nature of that relationship further.
Watching the end of Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1, when Devon signed on to be Maul’s apprentice, it honestly felt totally earned. As an actor, Adlon really sold it, and from her perspective, it made sense. She’s at a point where she needs to make a move, and surprisingly, Maul, despite everything, felt like the only safe choice for her. It’s a dark twist, but a compelling one!
Devon is unaware that Maul played a role in Daki’s death. Maul and Daki were battling Darth Vader as a team, but Maul ultimately left Daki to fight alone, even using the Force to push him closer to Vader. Devon arrived only after Vader had already delivered the killing blow.
Driven by her sorrow, anger, and a growing bond with Maul, along with limited choices, Devon has decided to align herself with him. With season 2 of Maul – Shadow Lord already greenlit, the next installment will explore whether Devon fully commits to seeking revenge through the dark side, or if she’ll struggle with Maul’s methods.
In the second season, the character will become involved with the criminal side of the Star Wars universe. Darth Maul has been hired to eliminate the head of Crimson Dawn by Dryden Vos (Scott Whyte). As Solo: A Star Wars Story showed, Maul eventually takes control of Crimson Dawn and expands his influence over the criminal underworld, and this season will be crucial to understanding how he gains power.
By the end of Star Wars Rebels season 2, Maul had lost his power and was isolated on Malachor. There, he attempted to train Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray) as his apprentice, similar to how he trained Devon. However, Devon is a brand new character in the Star Wars universe, and her future isn’t predetermined by existing stories.
Although we know Devon and Maul’s alliance won’t last forever, it’s unclear how things will play out, making the second season of the animated series particularly exciting. Maul remains fixated on revenge, never truly evolving despite repeated setbacks. Devon, on the other hand, has already shown significant growth as a character, and we can expect to see her continue to develop in the upcoming season.
Rylee Lawson (Charlie Bushnell) could play a significant role in the second season of Devon’s Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. Both she and Maul are now connected by the loss of parental figures – Rylee’s father, Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura), gave his life to save her. Rylee might represent the potential for good within Maul, while he could try to exploit her vulnerabilities.
