The United States has lost a key political figure.
Richard “Dick” Cheney, who served as Vice President under President George W. Bush, passed away on November 3rd, according to his family. He was 84 years old.
He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife of 61 years, Lynne, and his daughters, Liz and Mary, according to a statement to NBC News. The cause of death was complications from pneumonia and heart and blood vessel disease.
The Cheney family shared that for many years, Dick Cheney dedicated himself to public service, holding important positions such as White House Chief of Staff, U.S. Representative for Wyoming, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President.
Cheney’s loved ones also reflected on the personal legacy he was leaving within their family.
Oh my gosh, Dick Cheney was just… incredible. Seriously, a truly wonderful person. Everyone who knew him always said how much he cared about his family – he raised his kids and grandkids to be patriotic and brave, to live with integrity and kindness, and he even taught them to fly fish! It just shows what a full and amazing life he led. I honestly can’t express how thankful I am for everything he did for this country. He was a true hero, and I’ll always admire him.
As a longtime observer of public figures, I’ve always found it interesting how people are remembered. This gentleman, originally from Nebraska, actually started his Washington career in the House of Representatives back in 1979. He then served as Secretary of Defense for four years under President George H.W. Bush, a really significant role. But honestly, I think most people will always associate him with his time as Vice President to George W. Bush – that’s the period that really defined his public image.
As a longtime observer, I’ve always believed Dick Cheney was the most impactful Vice President we’ve ever seen. He wasn’t just Bush’s running mate through two winning campaigns; he was truly the President’s closest and most powerful advisor, especially when it came to dealing with the challenges of the post-9/11 world and the ‘war on terror’.
The years after the 9/11 attacks, marked by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, were filled with debate. This was especially true after a Senate report detailed the harsh interrogation methods used by the CIA.

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe what Dick Cheney said! Back in 2014, he was on Fox News and basically said he has absolutely NO regrets about… well, everything. He was so firm, saying he’d do it all over again in a heartbeat! It’s just… incredible. He truly believes what happened needed to happen, and that they were completely right to do it. I’ve watched that clip a million times, and it still gives me chills!
Throughout his long political career, the former vice president was a consistent Republican. However, in September 2024, he surprised many by announcing he would vote for Kamala Harris instead of Donald Trump, breaking with his party’s typical stance.
Though his political career started in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1979 and included a four-year term as Secretary of Defense under George H.W. Bush starting in 1989, he’s widely known for being Vice President to George W. Bush.
Dick Cheney is often considered the most influential vice president in modern history. He was a key partner to George W. Bush throughout his presidential campaigns and became a crucial advisor, especially during the response to the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent ‘war on terror’.
The years after the 9/11 attacks were a turbulent time in politics, marked by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. This period faced significant criticism, particularly when a Senate report detailed the harsh interrogation methods used by the CIA.

In a 2014 interview with Fox News, Dick Cheney defended his actions, stating he believed they were necessary and justified, and he would repeat them without hesitation.

According to a statement released at the time, Cheney accused the former president of attempting to win the last election through dishonest means and the use of force, all in an effort to remain in office despite losing the vote. She stated he should never be allowed to hold power again.
“As citizens, we each have a duty to put country above partisanship to defend our constitution,” he added. “That is why I will be casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.”
