Disappointing The Batman 2 Updates Prove We Need More of DC’s Best TV Show

Okay, so here’s the latest on *The Batman Part II* – and it’s a bit of a bummer for those of us who loved the *Gotham* TV show. Production is finally starting up for the sequel to Matt Reeves’ *The Batman* (you know, the really dark and gritty one from 2022), and we’re getting more hints about what’s in store. Basically, after everything the Riddler did to Gotham, Robert Pattinson is back as Batman to face a *new* bad guy. Thankfully, we’ll still see Andy Serkis as Alfred and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, which is a relief. It’s been a long road getting this movie made – it faced a bunch of delays before they landed on a 2027 release date. But even with those setbacks, the first *Batman* film and this upcoming sequel have already proven to be a huge success, and I’m really excited to see where Reeves takes this universe.

HBO Max’s series *The Penguin* was a big success, winning nine Emmy Awards and potentially earning a second season. The show, which takes place after the movie *The Batman*, follows Oswald “Oz” Cobb, a.k.a. the Penguin (played by Colin Farrell), as he fights to take over Gotham City’s criminal organizations. Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), the daughter of the late Carmine Falcone, is his main rival, but the Penguin ultimately wins, sending Sofia back to Arkham Asylum. Despite Milioti winning an Emmy for her performance, she won’t be in *The Batman Part II*. Farrell will return as Oz in the sequel, but his role will be different. This makes a second season of *The Penguin* even more important, giving the show’s compelling crime bosses another chance to take center stage.

DC Should Make The Penguin Season 2 a Priority

Currently, Matt Reeves is mainly concentrating on *The Batman Part II*, but DC Studios should start working on Season 2 of *The Penguin* soon. Colin Farrell’s character, the Penguin, was initially expected to have a bigger role in the Batman universe. However, Farrell recently told *The Hollywood Reporter* that his part in *The Batman Part II* won’t be as large as some fans might hope.

Farrell mentioned he has a smaller part in the new film, but he’s happy with that. He’s read the entire script and, while he can’t reveal details, he says it’s more intense, frightening, and has higher stakes than previous installments. He’s really looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

With Colin Farrell’s character, Oz, having a smaller part in the upcoming *The Batman Part II* and Sofia Falcone not appearing in the film, a second season of *The Penguin* should be a top priority for DC. The show offers compelling characters and a detailed, realistic portrayal of Gotham City’s criminal underworld. Even without traditional heroes, *The Penguin* balances its dark themes with characters who earn the audience’s sympathy. From Sofia, wrongly accused of murder, to Victor, Oz’s young apprentice who suffers a tragic loss and ultimately falls victim to the Penguin, the show is full of complex and relatable personalities. Over its eight episodes, the series reveals how Oz became so ruthless, establishing him as one of DC’s most terrifying villains.

Despite strong character work in *The Penguin* establishing Oz and Sofia Falcone, their limited role in *The Batman Part II* is a letdown. However, DC can fix this by quickly approving a second season of *The Penguin*. *The Batman Part II* probably has a compelling story planned for Batman himself, leaving little room for Oz or Sofia, so keeping them on the sidelines might have been a good choice. A second season of *The Penguin* would be a great way to bring Oz back as a major player in Gotham’s criminal underworld and continue the stories of the show’s supporting characters.

The Batman Franchise Needs a Better Plan, and The Penguin Season 2 Could Be the Answer

Delays in making *The Batman Part II* have disappointed fans of the DC universe. These issues also hint that there isn’t a solid long-term plan for the series. It’s concerning that the future of *The Batman* beyond the sequel is unclear, especially since additional movies and shows are important for the franchise to thrive. A bigger issue could arise if Matt Reeves’s vision for *The Batman* clashes with James Gunn’s plans for the new DC Universe, but it’s too early to know if that will happen. However, DC should definitely build on the popularity of *The Penguin* and quickly begin production on Season 2.

DC hasn’t officially announced a second season of *The Penguin* yet, but fans are hopeful it will happen. Lauren LeFranc, the show’s creator, recently signed a new deal with HBO and HBO Max, which suggests a renewal is possible. While LeFranc has said they’d need a strong story idea to continue the show—originally planned as a limited series—the fact that the team is still considering more episodes is a good sign.

The finale of *The Penguin* sets up several potential storylines for a second season. Sofia obtaining a letter from Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, hints at a possible alliance between the two, and Oz’s increased power suggests interesting developments for the villain. The show also has an opportunity to introduce new characters and further develop the complex world of Gotham City. Focusing on the world surrounding Bruce Wayne is a smart path for *The Batman* franchise, and a second season of *The Penguin* would be a great way to continue that exploration.
