Disney Channel viewers are upset, believing a planned retro event was cancelled because of poor viewership numbers. This follows the announcement of new programming on Hulu, Disney+, and Disney+ which includes bringing back beloved classic shows that fans have been requesting for years. While these shows also returned to television with a special broadcast on Disney Channel, it seems that didn’t boost ratings enough to continue the event.
Popular shows from Disney Channel’s golden age started appearing on the channel in early June, but recent TV listings and reports from fans online (like one user named Theagames10) suggest those broadcasts are ending. Although it looked like these nostalgic episodes would continue throughout the month, schedules for the next two weeks don’t show any more of them. However, the reason might be more complex than simply low viewership, as some believe.
Did Disney Channel Cancel Its Throwback Block Due to Low Ratings?
Disney+ and Hulu are celebrating classic shows with a special event featuring favorites like Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place. Some of these shows briefly returned to traditional TV, but it wasn’t certain if they’d continue airing throughout the summer. Despite reports that ratings were down compared to typical Thursday broadcasts, it remained unclear if the TV run would extend beyond the initial promotion.
This Disney+ and Hulu throwback campaign has mainly focused on streaming, even featuring a pop-up shop earlier this month. It doesn’t appear to include any special broadcasts on the Disney Channel itself, though. Instead of being cancelled, the channel simply isn’t continuing the promotional programming it originally used to drive viewers towards Disney+ for the event.
What Does This Mean for Disney’s Future?

Everyone’s talking about low ratings as the reason for cancelling these throwback shows, but that doesn’t quite fit with how Disney originally presented the Throwbacks celebration. From what I understand, it would have been a natural move to keep airing those classic movies and series on TV throughout the summer – especially with Camp Rock 3 coming up! But apparently, continuing them just wasn’t part of the plan.
Whether or not revisiting these older stories is a good idea is a separate discussion. What’s happening now is that Disney+ is bringing back many beloved classic movies and shows for streaming. They’ve already added quite a bit from their archive, with plans to add even more in the future. It’s possible some of this content could eventually appear on traditional TV, but that’s not what we’re focusing on right now.
