While Black Panther has appeared in just two major Marvel Cinematic Universe films so far, there’s also a lesser-known spin-off that delves deeper into the world of Wakanda. The original Black Panther movie, released in 2018, was a massive success. It captivated audiences with its unique setting, Ryan Coogler’s skillful direction, and outstanding performances from the cast, including Chadwick Boseman as King T’Challa and Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger.
Following the disruption caused by COVID-19, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had a very successful launch in 2022, earning over $850 million worldwide. The world of Wakanda has also expanded with Eyes of Wakanda, a unique spin-off series available on Disney+. Although presented as a limited series, it feels more like a full-length movie in terms of its scope and storytelling.
Eyes of Wakanda Fits The Bill As A Black Panther Spin-Off Feature
The animated series Eyes of Wakanda tells Wakanda’s history through four separate, yet connected, episodes. Together, they create a cohesive story about the nation, totaling around two hours in length – similar to the runtime of the Black Panther movie, which is two hours and fifteen minutes.
I’ve noticed a trend lately where movies really lean into a specific location or connect different characters through a central idea, even if their stories don’t directly overlap. Honestly, Eyes of Wakanda feels like it gets lost in the shuffle. As a Black Panther fan, I think it’s a great spin-off, but it’s frustrating that so many others haven’t given it a chance!
Black Panther Remains One Of The Strongest Properties In The MCU
As a huge MCU fan, I always thought Black Panther was something special. Most of the movies and shows feel grounded in our world, especially with New York being such a frequent location. But Black Panther completely changed things up by introducing Wakanda – this incredibly advanced, hidden African nation. It felt so different and fresh, and really expanded what the MCU could be.
We all know Wakanda is amazing from the Marvel movies, but its backstory is usually pretty quick. This new series, Eyes of Wakanda, really dives deep into how Wakanda first found vibranium, how they learned to use it, and how it helped them become so much more advanced than everyone else. It’s fascinating to see how their history unfolded!
| Project | Rotten Tomatoes Critics Score | Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score | Box Office |
| Black Panther | 96% | 79% | $1,349,926,083 |
| Black Panther: Wakanda Forever | 84% | 93% | $859,208,836 |
| Eyes of Wakanda | 92% | 51% | N/A |
Despite the heartbreaking and sudden loss of Chadwick Boseman, who many expected to become a key figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the original Avengers, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever performed exceptionally well with audiences, as shown by its high Rotten Tomatoes score. This clearly demonstrates that fans are very interested in the world of Wakanda and its future within the MCU.
Why Eyes Of Wakanda Was A Perfect One-and-Done Event Series
Although Eyes of Wakanda was presented as a four-part series, it was also described as a limited event, suggesting the story would be self-contained. This supports the idea that it functions like a Black Panther spin-off film, and it also gives the narrative a satisfying sense of closure.
Showrunner Todd Harris suggested there was potential for more, but with Axis Studios – the studio behind the show’s distinctive animation – now closed, further development seems highly unlikely. Despite this, the series successfully explored the secrets of Wakanda and offered fascinating glimpses into this previously hidden world.
Eyes of Wakanda is a strong, standalone movie that expands the Black Panther universe and lays important groundwork for future stories.
