Doc Martin’s US remake releases first look trailer with flurry of American TV favourites

Fox has released a short, fun preview of its American version of Doc Martin, now called Best Medicine. Josh Charles will be playing the part that Martin Clunes originally made famous.

In this story, Dr. Martin Best, a disillusioned physician, trades the busy streets of Boston for a peaceful, small fishing village on the East Coast. He’s welcomed with open arms by the friendly community there.

The new doctor, known as Dr. Best, initially seems as detached from the town’s happenings and chatter as the original Doc Martin did when he first came to Portwenn. However, he may eventually become more invested in the community.

Last month, news broke that Martin Clunes, the original star of Doc Martin, will be returning to the show playing the father of his former character.

Nigel Clunes will be playing a new character, Dr. Robert Best, who is expected to be just as dryly humorous as his famous character, Doc Martin. Fans can look forward to witty and sarcastic remarks similar to those delivered by his son in the show.

British viewers are usually wary of American remakes of their favorite shows, but there’s a chance “Best Medicine” might actually be a successful one.

Besides Hugo Clunes and Charles, who’s appeared in shows like The Good Wife, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and The Handmaid’s Tale, the show Best Medicine features several other actors you might recognize.

The comedy-drama’s main cast includes Abigail Spencer, known from shows like Suits and Grey’s Anatomy, Josh Segarra (She-Hulk, Abbott Elementary), and Annie Potts (Young Sheldon, Ghostbusters). Newcomer Cree, who has appeared in Big Sky and And Just Like That…, also joins the regular cast.

I’m really excited to hear that Selina Potts is joining the cast! She’ll be playing Aunt to Martin Clunes’ character, Dr. Martin Ellingham, and it’s good to know we’ll see at least one familiar face as he starts his new life and work.

I’m really excited for “Best Medicine” to finally hit screens! It’s set to premiere on FOX in the US this January, and thankfully, episodes will then be available to stream on Hulu. The only downside? We in the UK are still waiting to hear when – or even if – it’ll be coming our way. Fingers crossed we don’t have to wait too long!

If people enjoy it, a major streaming service might quickly acquire it, similar to what happened with the American version of ‘Ghosts,’ which now streams alongside the original UK series on BBC iPlayer.
