Doctor Who fans delighted as Sheridan Smith recalls beloved companion while sitting beside show legend Peter Capaldi

Sheridan Smith shared memories of her time in the ‘Doctor Who’ universe while appearing alongside veteran actor Peter Capaldi.

I’ve been a big fan of the audio dramas Big Finish puts out, and I always enjoy the actress’s work as Lucy Miller. She’s the Eighth Doctor’s companion, and she’s been in so many of those stories – it’s great to hear her consistently bring that character to life!

While promoting her new BBC drama, The Cage, on Wednesday’s The One Show, Smith shared memories of her experience playing the character.

She explained that seeing people at the stage door always meant there were dedicated Doctor Who fans present. She played a character named Lucy Miller, and her main job in the show involved pretending to run from the Daleks while inside a small booth.

Turning to Capaldi, she added: “Whereas you did the real thing, I’m in awe.”

Peter Capaldi, known for playing the Doctor from 2014 to 2017, recently appeared on The One Show to talk about the new season of his TV show, Criminal Record. He also shared a fun story about his time on Doctor Who: he used to sneak onto the set even when he wasn’t filming, especially to watch scenes with the Daleks – particularly when they were being destroyed.

Alexandria Smith began her involvement with Doctor Who in 2007, playing the character Lucie in a series of audio dramas for Big Finish, which aired on the BBC. She played the role for four series, until 2011, when her character tragically died while protecting Earth from the Daleks.

In 2019, she returned to her role as the Doctor’s companion in a collection of stories called The Further Adventures of Lucie Miller.

Coming soon to BBC One, “The Cage” features Smith as Leanne, a casino worker in Liverpool who’s been secretly stealing money. Her scheme gets complicated when she finds out a colleague (Michael Socha) is also taking cash, and things rapidly escalate.
