Doctor Who Future Gets Major Update (& Those Reboot Rumors Suddenly Sound More Believable)

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I’m really excited about what’s happening! It looks like Doctor Who is moving to a new streaming home in the US after the deal with Disney didn’t quite work out. The BBC has been saying they’re committed to the show, but with them facing some financial challenges, things have been uncertain. Now, there’s a lot of talk about partnerships with AMC and Sony to keep the series going – and even the possibility of a fresh start with a reboot! It’s a bit nerve-wracking, but I’m hopeful this means more adventures in time and space are on the way.

Starting June 11th, new episodes of Doctor Who will be available on AMC+, according to AMC. The announcement was first made on a Twitter account that hadn’t been used since the show moved to Disney+.

AMC has announced that the show will consist of 13 seasons and a total of 176 episodes, including special installments. However, episodes created during its partnership with Disney+ will not be available on AMC+. It’s likely Disney will continue to distribute those episodes, and probably the spin-off series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, which hasn’t yet premiered on Disney+.

How Does This Fit In With Recent Doctor Who Reports?

In late April, a potential leak sparked excitement among Doctor Who fans: a draft press release suggested a new partnership between the BBC, AMC, and Sony. While the idea of a collaboration was positive, the use of the word “reboot” worried many viewers. The draft claimed an announcement would arrive on May 11th, but when that date passed without news, most people assumed the leak was false. However, AMC’s recent announcement now makes the original leak seem much more credible. It’s clear the BBC and AMC are working together on Doctor Who again.

AMC+ will offer the first thirteen seasons of Doctor Who, but won’t include the special episodes that aired on Disney+ or the episodes starring Ncuti Gatwa. This is frustrating because it means fans won’t be able to watch the 60th anniversary specials, which brought back David Tennant. However, this also highlights why a fresh start with a reboot might be appealing. The Disney+ era ended with an unresolved storyline, so Russell T. Davies’ upcoming Christmas special has to address that. This will create a noticeable gap in the show’s history, making a reboot seem like a good way to continue the story.

It’s still wise to be skeptical about that rumored leak. The fact that Doctor Who is coming to AMC+ is positive news, though – it shows there’s still a strong audience for the show, and that AMC+ is dedicated to bringing it to viewers. We’ll have to wait and see if this partnership involves anything beyond what’s been revealed so far.
