The highly anticipated spinoff, first revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, will finally premiere after more than a year of waiting.
Writer Russell T. Davies announced on Instagram that The War Between the Land and the Sea will premiere on December 7th. However, that’s also when the new Doctor Who spinoff debuts on BBC One. Unfortunately, viewers in the United States won’t be able to watch The War Between the Land and the Sea until 2026, when it arrives on Disney+.
When a terrifying, ancient species rises from the ocean and makes its presence known to the world, it sparks a global crisis. Facing a threat to all of humanity, UNIT intervenes as a conflict erupts between the land and the sea.
Russell Davies announced on social media that the new series will premiere on BBC One with two episodes on December 7th. Two more episodes will air on December 14th, leading to a dramatic finale on December 21st. He described the series as a five-episode set perfect for watching over the Christmas holidays, promising a story filled with war, revenge, betrayal, romance, and even a ‘plastic apocalypse,’ all set against the backdrop of the sea. Don’t miss ‘The Seas!’
A new series will center on UNIT, the Doctor’s allies, as they battle the Sea Devils, a classic enemy from Doctor Who. Jemma Redgrave returns as Katie Lethbridge-Stewart, and Alexander Devrient plays Colonel Christofer Ibrahim. Russel Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, both familiar faces from the Doctor Who universe, will appear as entirely new characters.
The trailer for The War Between the Land and the Sea suggests this new Doctor Who series will be grittier and more adult in tone. It appears the show explores darker themes than previous Doctor Who installments, taking advantage of the Doctor’s absence to tell a more complex story.
Disney+ and the Future of Doctor Who
The upcoming spinoff now has a release date, following recent changes within the Doctor Who universe. Reports surfaced in late October 2025 that Disney+ would stop co-producing the show after The War Between the Land and the Sea. Despite this, Doctor Who will continue, with a Christmas special planned for sometime in 2026.
Lindsay Salt, the drama director at the BBC, expressed gratitude to Disney+ for their past partnership, but also confirmed that Doctor Who will continue even without them. She stated that the BBC is still fully dedicated to the show – one of their most popular dramas – and that Russell T. Davies will be writing another special Christmas episode for 2026. Salt reassured fans that the Doctor will be back, and that details about the next series, which will keep Doctor Who firmly with the BBC, will be announced soon.
I’m so excited for “The War Between the Land and the Sea”! It’s coming to BBC One on December 7th, and if you miss it there, don’t worry – it’ll also be on Disney+ in 2026. I’ve been waiting for this!
