Oscar Isaac is well-known for his roles in popular franchises like Star Wars, where he played Poe Dameron, and Marvel, including the series Moon Knight and the voice of Miguel O’Hara in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. But his work extends far beyond these big-budget films and shows.
Isaac has spent years working on films and TV shows that, while not always mainstream hits, are often creatively ambitious. A prime example, and one that doesn’t get enough attention, is his powerful performance in the 2021 HBO Max limited series Scenes from a Marriage. This series is a remake of the classic 1973 Swedish show by Ingmar Bergman, and many consider it to be Isaac’s finest work.
Scenes From A Marriage Is A Gorgeous Limited Series

The 2021 series Scenes from a Marriage follows Jonathan (Oscar Isaac) and Mira (Jessica Chastain) as their marriage unravels. Initially, they appear content, but an early, slightly uncomfortable interview hints at underlying issues. Following a painful experience with an abortion and a shocking confession from Mira, their relationship quickly deteriorates.
I was completely absorbed by this incredibly layered story. It really delves into everything – love, divorce, the struggles people face with their mental health, and the complexities of being a parent. And the acting? Just phenomenal – Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain are both incredible. Visually, it’s stunning too; the cinematography feels so raw and authentic, which perfectly complements their incredibly honest performances. Honestly, I thought Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story was a fantastic divorce film, but this series just takes things to a whole new level. It’s easily surpassed it for me.
Oscar Isaac Has Never Been Better

Oscar Isaac is a remarkably talented actor, proven by his memorable roles. While the Star Wars sequel trilogy wasn’t universally loved, his character, Poe Dameron, was often praised, particularly at the beginning. However, Isaac truly shines in Scenes from a Marriage, delivering incredibly powerful and emotional performances and essentially carrying the story.
Both Isaac and Scenes from a Marriage really deserve more recognition. While the show has good scores on Rotten Tomatoes – 83% from critics and 81% from viewers – it didn’t get the widespread praise it probably deserved. Thankfully, it’s still available to stream on HBO Max, so you can check it out and decide for yourself.
