While many Doctor Doom comics have been released since Robert Downey Jr. was announced to play him in summer 2024, the game Marvel Rivals, which also featured a futuristic version of Doom from the year 2099, really boosted his popularity. As DC Comics recently surpassed Marvel in sales, Marvel is working hard to attract new readers, and Rivals has proven helpful in that effort. Therefore, offering these new fans a story featuring Doom 2099 is a smart move.

As a big comic book and Doom fan, I gotta say, Doom 2099: Rage of Doom #1 is a really solid read. Frank Tieri and Von Randal have crafted a story that feels both accessible to newcomers and satisfying for those of us who’ve been following Doom 2099 for years. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it absolutely delivers what you want, and the ending? It’s a cool surprise that definitely leaves you wanting more. It’s not going to be anyone’s all-time favorite Doom story, but it’s a fantastic jumping-on point or a great addition to your existing collection.
