In response to queries, Square Enix has verified that the Nintendo Switch 2 will indeed host the release of the Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake, but it’s important to note that there won’t be a straight upgrade option for those who initially purchase the game on the Switch, should they later opt for the Switch 2. The company has clarified in a recent FAQ that each platform, including both the current Switch and the upcoming Switch 2, will receive unique versions of these remade games.
As per the FAQ, those who purchase the Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake on the Nintendo Switch can play it on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, but it’s important to note that the game’s performance and graphics will remain the same as they would on the original Switch. It’s also worth mentioning that Nintendo Switch 2 users will need to buy the game separately, as there won’t be any upgrade options available at a reduced price. Furthermore, players transitioning from the Nintendo Switch version to the Nintendo Switch 2 version won’t be able to transfer their save data, meaning they’ll have to start anew upon upgrading systems.
The upcoming release, titled Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake, serves as a continuation from the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. Both Dragon Quest 1 and 2 follow the storyline after the events of Dragon Quest 3, forming what is known as the Edrick trilogy. The first gameplay trailer for this remake was unveiled during a Nintendo Direct in March. Although the trailer didn’t disclose many new game features, it did offer a sneak peek at how the HD-2D art style, which Square Enix has been employing for several of its titles since Octopath Traveler, enhances the appearance of these two titles.
The re-release of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake in 2024 has proven to be a significant financial boost for Square Enix, as reported earlier this year, contributing significantly to their increase in operating income. In February’s financial results briefing, it was revealed that the game surpassed expectations, generating a staggering ¥60 billion in net sales and earning an operating profit of ¥4.6 billion.
The upgraded versions of Dragon Quest 1 and 2, titled “HD-2D Remake,” will be released across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and the anticipated Switch 2 on October 30. Preorders are now open on all platforms at a price point of $59.99.
Apart from the ongoing developments in the Dragon Quest series, it’s worth mentioning that a fresh installment, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, has been in the works for quite some time now. There hasn’t been much news about this game since its initial reveal, but we do know that it will be built using Unreal Engine 5. Additionally, whispers suggest that a remake of Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is also being worked on, although Square Enix has yet to confirm these reports officially.
